About Rameswaram Tours & Experiences
The best things to do in Rameswaram begin at the Ramanathaswamy temple: dawn darshan of its crystal linga, a dip at Agni Theertham and in water from its 22 wells, and a walk down its third corridor. Beyond it lie the Pamban bridges, Dhanushkodi and the Kalam memorial. Both tour packages listed here stay a night on the island.

Things to do in Rameswaram
The Ramanathaswamy temple sets the island's day: by its timetable it opens at 4 am, breaks from 1 to 3 pm and closes by 9 pm.
Be at the temple for the dawn darshan
Darshan opens at 5 am with the Spatika linga, a crystal linga shown only until 6 am. Both packages sleep on the island, so you can be there the morning after you arrive.
Bathe at Agni Theertham and the 22 wells
Agni Theertham, the sea on the eastern shore opposite the temple, is the seashore Tamil Nadu Tourism ties most closely to it, and a dip there is believed to wash away sins. Inside, water from the temple's 22 holy wells is poured over pilgrims between 5.30 am and 12.30 pm and between 3 and 7 pm. Bring dry clothes.
Walk the third corridor
The third corridor runs 197 metres from east to west, the longest in Asia by the district administration's account, lined with pillars Tamil Nadu Tourism praises for their carving.
Cross the Pamban strait
Driving onto the island, you see the new Pamban rail bridge alongside, the first vertical-lift sea bridge in India, its 72.5-metre span rising 17 metres to let ships pass. Our packages cross by car from Madurai, about three hours away; trains, including one from Tambaram in Chennai, use the bridge.
Go to Dhanushkodi
Dhanushkodi, at the island's tip 18 km from the town, was destroyed by a cyclone in 1964, and the Ramayana places the start of Ram Setu on its shore. Neither package schedules it.
Choosing between our tours and experiences
Both tour packages listed here give the island one night between Madurai and Kanyakumari. The South India Temple Trail — 10 days takes the long way round from Chennai and suits travellers drawn to temple architecture; it includes a local guide at the main temples. The 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour is a pilgrimage that lists darshan at the Ramanathaswamy temple on day 4, with assistance in the darshan queues. When to go for these
Tamil Nadu Tourism recommends October to March, yet about 65% of the Ramanathapuram district's normal rain falls from October to December, the northeast monsoon season, which is also when cyclones in the Bay of Bengal peak; wind above 58 km/h automatically halts trains on the bridge. January to March is far drier, better for the sea bath and Dhanushkodi.
Planning tips for the temple and the island
- Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and go barefoot inside.
- Special-entrance and quick-darshan tickets are sold for the main shrine.
- Use the 1 to 3 pm closure for Dhanushkodi or the Kalam memorial.
