Mahabalipuram, also called Mamallapuram, is a seaside town about 57 km south of Chennai whose Pallava monuments of the 7th and 8th centuries form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monuments open from 6 am to 6 pm, and one full day covers them.

All of Tamil NaduFrequently asked questions
What can children enjoy in Mahabalipuram?
Krishna's Butterball, a giant boulder poised on a slope, makes an easy first stop, and the Five Rathas and the beach give room to roam. The Crocodile Bank, on the road from Chennai, has bred thousands of crocodiles and alligators.
How do you spend two days in Mahabalipuram?
Give the first morning to the monuments, from the Shore Temple to the Five Rathas, and the evening to the beach or, in season, the dance festival. On the second day, see the Tiger Cave and the Crocodile Bank or DakshinaChitra, or in winter make an early start for the birds at Vedanthangal.
Can you buy stone carvings in Mahabalipuram?
Yes. The town's carving holds Geographical Indication status as Mahabalipuram Stone Sculpture, and Tamil Nadu Tourism counts it among the state's most sought-after crafts. The Government College of Architecture and Sculpture, beside the coast road, has taught the craft since 1957.
What should you wear to explore Mahabalipuram?
Light cotton and a hat suit a climate that Tamil Nadu Tourism calls humid almost all year, with shoes that grip on sloping rock. At a working temple, such as Thirukazhukundram's hilltop Vedagiriswarar, cover shoulders and knees and leave shoes at the entrance.
About Mahabalipuram Tours & Experiences
The best things to do in Mahabalipuram are to walk its Pallava monuments when the gates open at 6 am, see the Indian Dance Festival on winter evenings, take a surf lesson, look at the town's stone carving and spend a day on the coast road. Both of our tours stay a night here, with a local guide at the main temple sites.

Things to do in Mahabalipuram
The monuments fill a morning; the rest suits a second day or a night by the sea.
Walk the monuments in the morning cool
The Archaeological Survey of India opens the monuments at 6 am. Start at the Shore Temple by the sea, then Arjuna's Penance, the cave temples and the Five Rathas, ending at Krishna's Butterball. On both of our tours, a local guide takes you round the Shore Temple and the rock-cut monuments on day 2.
See the Indian Dance Festival
From late December into January, the state tourism department stages dance beside the monuments every evening (5.30 to 8.30 pm in its latest listing), from Bharatanatyam to folk forms such as Mayilattam and Thappattam. At other times of year, the Shore Temple is floodlit after dark.
Take a surf lesson
Several surf schools here teach beginners, says Tamil Nadu Tourism, and Covelong, up the coast towards Chennai, has waves all year. At Muttukadu, the state tourism corporation's boat house rents boats and jet skis and runs windsurfing classes.
Spend a day on the coast road
Towards Chennai, the Crocodile Bank keeps crocodiles, alligators, turtles and snakes, and DakshinaChitra shows South Indian houses rebuilt with craftspeople at work. Outside town at Saluvankuppam, the Tiger Cave, carved with tiger heads, needs a car.
Watch winter birds at Vedanthangal
In the same district, Vedanthangal has been a bird sanctuary since 1936; in winter its trees fill with spoonbills, painted storks, ibises, herons and egrets.
Choosing between our tours through Mahabalipuram
Here our two tours are the same: you arrive from Chennai on day 2 (about 90 minutes' drive on the Temple Trail), see the monuments with a guide, sleep in town and leave on day 3 for Thanjavur, four to five hours away. Choose by the ending: Kanyakumari on the South India Temple Trail — 10 days, or Kerala's hills and backwaters on the 10 Days South India Tour Package. Details: Mahabalipuram tour packages.
When to go for these
Tamil Nadu Tourism recommends November to February, but the coast's heaviest rain normally falls in November: about 374 mm at Chennai, 57 km north (India Meteorological Department), and December is when cyclones most often reach this coast. January to March are dry, with daytime highs near 30–33°C, while May and June reach about 37°C, so see the rocks early.
Getting about
The main monuments are a walk apart; only the Tiger Cave needs transport. For their history, see our Mahabalipuram travel guide.
