Kanyakumari Travel Guide: Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Sunsets and Planning
Kanyakumari is the southern tip of the Indian mainland, in Tamil Nadu, where the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean meet. The places to visit in Kanyakumari are the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar Statue on two rocks offshore, the Kumari Amman Temple, Gandhi Mandapam and Kamarajar Manimandapam. January to March is the driest season, and one or two nights is enough.

What is there to do in Kanyakumari in the evening?
Watch the sunset, and at full moon the moonrise. The Kumari Amman temple is open from 4 to 8.30 pm and the Kamarajar Mani Mandapam until 7 pm; the boats and the rock are daytime only.
What is a good order for a day in Kanyakumari?
Sunrise first, then an early boat for the memorial, the bridge and the statue. Reach the Kumari Amman temple before 12.30 pm, spend the afternoon at the Gandhi Mandapam and the Kamarajar memorial, and finish with the sunset.
What is the Kamarajar Mani Mandapam?
A memorial to K. Kamaraj, freedom fighter and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, raised where his ashes were kept for public homage before their immersion in the sea. The district administration gives its hours as 7 am to 7 pm.
What is Kanyakumari like in the monsoon?
Wet: it takes rain from both monsoons, about 1,338 mm a year, more than Madurai or Rameswaram, and mornings are humid. Heavy rain and strong wind stop the boats, so allow a spare morning.
About Kanyakumari Tours & Experiences
The best things to do in Kanyakumari happen by the sea: sunrise at mainland India's southern tip, the boat to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the glass bridge to the Thiruvalluvar statue, darshan at the Kumari Amman temple, and a full-moon evening of sunset and moonrise. Both our tour packages end here.

Things to do in Kanyakumari
Boats to the rock run from 8 am to mid-afternoon and the Kumari Amman temple shuts from 12.30 to 4 pm: plan around both.
Watch sunrise, sunset and the full-moon rise
Watch the sun come up from the shore at the mainland's tip, where, Tamil Nadu Tourism says, the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea meet. Both packages give their first evening to a sunset; on a full-moon day, it adds, sunset and moonrise can be watched together, as nowhere else in India.
Take the boat to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial
The memorial stands about 500 metres offshore, on the rock where Vivekananda sat in meditation in December 1892. The state-run ferry sells tickets online in half-hour slots from 8 am to 3.30 pm; bring the ID used for the booking and arrive half an hour early. The South India Temple Trail — 10 days keeps its free ninth day for the trip and the 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour its last morning, weather permitting; neither includes the boat ride.
Cross the glass bridge to the Thiruvalluvar statue
A 77-metre glass bridge leads from the memorial to the next rock, where the Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar's statue rises 133 feet; the memorial and the bridge are open from 8 am to 4 pm.
Pray at the Kumari Amman temple
The town is named after the goddess Kanyakumari, who, the district administration recounts, stayed unmarried here and killed Banasura, a demon, on Vijaya Dashami, when Navratri ends. Her temple is open 4.30 am to 12.30 pm and 4 to 8.30 pm.
See the Gandhi Mandapam
Gandhi's ashes rested here in an urn before their immersion off Kanyakumari in 1948; at midday on his birthday, 2 October, sunlight falls through a gap in the roof onto the urn's pedestal.
Choosing between our tours and experiences
Both tour packages listed here end in Kanyakumari, with a transfer to Trivandrum or Madurai airport. The temple trail stays two nights with a free day, so the boat need not be rushed; the six-day tour stays one, for pilgrims on a tighter schedule. When to go for these
The driest stretch is January and February, with under 40 mm of rain between them, while each monsoon, June to September and October to December, brings roughly 500 mm. Highs stay at about 30 to 34°C all year, so wind and rain matter more than heat. Tamil Nadu Tourism's recommended season is November to March.
Planning tips for the ferry
Book the boat online early, as slots sell out, and keep a spare morning: winds above 25 to 30 knots, heavy rain and IMD storm alerts stop it.
