Darjeeling Travel Guide: Places to Visit, the Toy Train and Planning

Darjeeling is a hill town in West Bengal at about 2,000 metres, known for its tea, the UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and views of Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain. Its main sights are Tiger Hill, Batasia Loop, the Peace Pagoda and the tea estates. Fly to Bagdogra or take a train to New Jalpaiguri, allow two to three days, and expect the clearest views from October to December.

Frequently asked questions

What can children do in Darjeeling?

Ride the toy train, a seated, gentle trip with halts at the Batasia Loop's garden and Ghum's rail museum. On the Mall children can ride a pony, and Chowrasta, closed to vehicles, is a safe place for them to roam in the evening.

Is Darjeeling worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you dress for it. Outside the monsoon the sky is only lightly or moderately clouded, which helps the mountain views, but January nights average 1.2 °C by IMD's figures and mornings are often misty, so a clear dawn at Tiger Hill is never certain. The toy train runs across most of the year.

How can you tell genuine Darjeeling tea?

Look for the Darjeeling certification trademark, which the Tea Board owns and licenses; only tea from the 87 registered estates qualifies. Every consignment leaving India also travels with a Tea Board certificate of origin, whose number leads back to the invoice behind it.

What can you do in Darjeeling in one day?

Go up Tiger Hill before dawn, take the joy ride to Ghum after breakfast and look round Ghum's monasteries while you are there. Spend the afternoon among the tea gardens and finish on the Mall and at Chowrasta as the lights come on.

About Darjeeling Tours & Experiences

The best things to do in Darjeeling are the toy-train joy ride to Ghum, dawn light on Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill, buying tea from the hills' registered estates, an evening on the car-free Mall and Ghum's monasteries. Our toy train experience covers the ride with station transfers, a local guide and joy-ride tickets; the weather decides the mountain views.

Things to do in Darjeeling

The sights and the journey up are in our Darjeeling travel guide; this page covers what to do.

Ride the toy train to Ghum

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway's joy ride leaves Darjeeling station, pauses about ten minutes at the Batasia Loop, where the line circles a garden memorial to Gorkha soldiers, and about half an hour at Ghum's rail museum before returning. Indian Railways runs joy rides behind steam or diesel engines. Our toy train experience arranges the ride; ask us to check the day's schedule if steam matters to you.

Dawn at Tiger Hill

Tiger Hill, 2,590 metres high and 13 km from town, is where people go before sunrise to watch the first light catch Kanchenjunga and the eastern Himalayan snows; on a very clear morning, West Bengal Tourism says, Everest shows too.

Buying genuine Darjeeling tea

Tea sold as Darjeeling must come from one of 87 hill estates registered under the geographical indication, so look for the certification mark the Tea Board licenses when you buy. You pass the gardens on the toy train and on the roads out of town.

An evening on the Mall and Chowrasta

Chowrasta and the Mall, the heart of the town, are closed to traffic. In the evening they fill with people strolling, sitting on benches, eating from food stalls and browsing roadside stalls, and ponies give rides round the Mall.

Ghum's monasteries and the Peace Pagoda

Ghum, about 6 km from town, has several Buddhist monasteries set against the mountains. On the Jalapahar slopes, the Peace Pagoda, 28.5 metres tall, was built under the guidance of the monk Nichidatsu Fujii and holds four forms of the Buddha.

Choosing between our tours and experiences

Our one Darjeeling trip is the toy-train ride, listed under toy trains in Darjeeling, an experience that suits nearly everyone: seated and gentle, with no altitude planning or fitness needed, it pleases families and rail enthusiasts alike. Our toy trains page compares it with India's other mountain lines.

When to go for these

Cloud decides what you see. IMD's averages for the town make June to September the wet months, with about 785 mm in July alone and mostly overcast skies; outside those months cloud is light to moderate, so October to May gives the better chance of a view.

Before you go

  • Monsoon rain sometimes disrupts the hill roads and the railway, so leave spare time in a June–September visit.
  • Pack warm layers for Tiger Hill and the evenings.
