The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly known as the toy train, is a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge railway winding through the West Bengal hill town of Darjeeling, looping at the Batasia Loop war memorial for views towards Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak. Most visitors ride a short joy-ride segment rather than the full line, and it needs no acclimatisation or particular fitness.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Darjeeling toy train?
The popular name for the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge line built in the nineteenth century, known for its small carriages and steep, looping route through the hills.
Will I see Kanchenjunga from the toy train?
Only if the weather cooperates. Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak, is visible from the Batasia Loop and other points on clear days, most reliably in the cooler months, but cloud cover can hide it entirely.
Do I ride the full historic line or a shorter segment?
Most visitors ride a short joy-ride segment, typically Darjeeling to Ghum and back, rather than the full historic route down to the plains.
Is the toy train ride suitable for children or older travellers?
Yes — it is a largely seated, gentle experience with no acclimatisation or fitness demands, suitable for a broad range of ages.
Does the toy train run in the monsoon?
Services generally continue, but monsoon rain can affect hill roads and occasionally the rail line itself, so we build flexibility into a monsoon-season visit.
