Places to visit in Gokarna

Gokarna lies on the western coast of Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka. Incredible India describes it as a small town of two main streets and tile-roofed brick houses, and a centre of Sanskrit learning. The temples and the sacred tank are in the town; the beaches begin a short drive or walk away; the fort, caves and waterfalls are inland.

Mahabaleshwar Temple

Karnataka Tourism calls this temple the Kashi of the South. It is famous for the Atmalinga, which according to the legend Ravana received from Shiva on the condition that he never set it down before reaching Lanka. When Ravana stopped to pray, Ganesha, in the form of a boy, held it, and the linga settled into the ground and could not be lifted. Maha Shivaratri, in February or March, is the biggest festival. The temple stands on Car Street, where vehicles cannot go, so you walk about ten minutes through the bazaar.

Maha Ganapati Temple and Koti Teertha

The small Maha Ganapati Temple lies close to the Mahabaleshwar Temple, and Karnataka Tourism says pilgrims traditionally visit it first. Koti Teertha, the sacred tank, sits in the heart of the town a short distance from the temple, and Hindus bathe there before darshan. The temple, the Ganapati shrine and the tank all stand in the old town.

Gokarna Main Beach

The town's beach is the one nearest the temple. Karnataka Tourism warns that it is not ideal for swimming because of strong currents. Incredible India counts five beaches around Gokarna: the Main Beach, Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise. This one is a place to walk and watch the sea, not to bathe.

Kudle Beach

Incredible India puts Kudle about 6 km from the town. Karnataka Tourism calls it the largest of Gokarna's beaches, with cafés and guesthouses along the sand, and Incredible India mentions its calm sunset views. It is also where the coastal hike to Om Beach begins, so it makes a natural base for the beaches.

Om Beach

Om Beach, about 7 km from the town by Incredible India's figure, takes its name from its curved shape. It is popular for surfing and for watching the sunset, and Karnataka Tourism says a semi-enclosed pool gives calmer water. Swimming still carries risk, so ask the lifeguards or locals whether the sea is safe on the day.

Half Moon and Paradise beaches

Half Moon Beach is described as a retreat with very few facilities, and Paradise Beach, also called Full Moon Beach, as the most remote and least touched. Half Moon can be reached on foot or by boat from Om Beach. Karnataka Tourism describes the coastal route from Kudle to Om to Half Moon to Paradise as a 2 to 4 hour hike; wear sturdy footwear and carry enough water.

Mirjan Fort and Yana

Mirjan Fort stands about 11 km from Gokarna in Kumta taluk. It is built from local red laterite stone, and the district administration praises its construction. Yana is a village in the forests of the Sahyadri range, also in Kumta taluk, where Incredible India notes a cave beneath the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara rock that houses a self-manifested linga. Karnataka Tourism says both look especially green in the monsoon.

Vibhuti Falls and other waterfalls

Vibhuti Falls, in Ankola taluk, takes its name from the word for limestone. Karnataka Tourism calls the monsoon the best time to see it, when the beaches are closed for swimming, although Incredible India says water flows there across the year. The district administration also lists Apsarakonda Falls, whose name means a pond for angels.

Things to do in Gokarna

The temple visit and the beach walk are the core of a stay. Add surfing at Om Beach, a sunset at Kudle, the Kudle-to-Paradise hike, and, from the monsoon to winter, the waterfalls inland. Scuba diving at Netrani Island is done from the boat, because landing on the island is prohibited.

For day trips, Murudeshwar is about 76 km away and Sirsi 78 km, according to Incredible India, which also names Dandeli as an excursion without giving a distance. Best time to visit Gokarna

Karnataka Tourism gives October to March as the season and October to February as its peak, the best window to visit. From March to May the temperature reaches 35 to 38°C, and early mornings and evenings are more comfortable.

From June to September, the monsoon, the beaches are closed for swimming and water sports because of rough seas, and the beach hike can be slippery and risky. The same page recommends the rains for Vibhuti Falls and notes that Yana and Mirjan Fort are at their greenest. Around Maha Shivaratri, in February or March, Incredible India advises booking accommodation well in advance. Our monsoon guide explains the season nationwide.

How to reach Gokarna

  • By air: Karnataka Tourism lists Dabolim airport in Goa as the nearest, about 149 km away, and Mopa in Goa about 175 km. Incredible India also names Hubballi and Mangaluru airports.
  • By train: the nearest railway station is Gokarna Road (GOK), about 10 km from the town. Ankola, about 20 km away, is better connected.
  • By road: about 485 km from Bengaluru, a 9 to 10 hour drive; about 238 km from Mangaluru, about five hours; about 145 km from Goa, about three hours.

How many days in Gokarna

Two nights suit most visitors. Spend the first day on the temple, Koti Teertha and the town, with sunset at Kudle. Spend the second on the hike from Kudle to Om, Half Moon and Paradise, which Incredible India measures at about 4 km one way from Kudle to Paradise. A third night allows Mirjan Fort, Yana or Vibhuti Falls, or a long day to Murudeshwar. For the rest of the state, see our Karnataka travel guide.

Where to stay and getting around in Gokarna

Staying in the town puts the temple, Koti Teertha and the bazaar on foot. Kudle has the most cafés and guesthouses, Om is a short distance on, and Half Moon and Paradise have very few facilities. Check the distance between your stay and the beach you want before you book. The temple lane is closed to vehicles, so leave your car outside the bazaar.

Temple etiquette and beach safety

Karnataka Tourism lists the Mahabaleshwar Temple as open daily from 6 am to 12.30 pm and from 5 pm to 8 pm, with hours that can shift on festival days, ekadashi, Pradosham and Mondays. It says men are expected to wear a dhoti or lungi in the sanctum and may take off their shirts there, that women should wear traditional dress, and that revealing Western clothing is discouraged. Photographs and video are not allowed inside. Entry to the inner sanctum is decided by the temple office and priests, so ask on arrival.

At the beach, do not swim at the Main Beach, follow the lifeguards' advice elsewhere, and keep out of the sea in the monsoon.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gokarna worth visiting?

It suits travellers who want a working temple town and a choice of beaches in one stay. The Mahabaleshwar Temple draws pilgrims, while Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise beaches draw those who want sand and a coastal hike. October to February is the best season; in the monsoon, swimming is closed.

How many days do you need in Gokarna?

Two nights are enough for the temple, the town and the beaches. A third night adds Mirjan Fort, Yana or Vibhuti Falls. If you plan the whole Kudle-to-Paradise hike, which is a 2 to 4 hour walk, give it a half day and start in the morning.

Can you swim at Gokarna's beaches?

Not everywhere. Karnataka Tourism says the Main Beach is not ideal for swimming because of strong currents, and that the beaches are closed for swimming and water sports from June to September. Om Beach has a calmer pool, but you should still ask the lifeguards or locals whether the water is safe that day.

What should you wear to the Mahabaleshwar Temple?

Karnataka Tourism says men are expected to wear a dhoti or lungi in the sanctum and may remove their shirt there, women should wear traditional Indian dress, and revealing Western clothing is discouraged. Photography and video are not allowed inside. Confirm the rules at the temple office, because Karnataka Tourism's own pages describe them differently.

What is there to do in Gokarna apart from the beaches?

The temples and the sacred tank are the heart of the town. Beyond it are Mirjan Fort, about 11 km away, the forest village of Yana with its cave shrine, and Vibhuti Falls, best in the monsoon. Murudeshwar is about 76 km away for a longer day trip.

How far is Gokarna from Goa and Bengaluru?

Gokarna is about 145 km and three hours from Goa, and Dabolim airport is about 149 km away. From Bengaluru it is about 485 km, a 9 to 10 hour drive. The nearest railway station is Gokarna Road, about 10 km from the town, and Ankola, 20 km away, is better connected.

Which Gokarna beach is best?

It depends what you want. Kudle is the largest and has cafés and guesthouses, Om is known for surfing and sunsets, Half Moon has very few facilities, and Paradise is the most remote. The Main Beach is beside the temple but unsuitable for swimming.
