Places to visit in Kabini

Kabini is not a national park of its own. It is the Kabini reservoir and its backwaters, which Karnataka Tourism says separate Bandipur from Nagarahole National Park. Nagarahole, also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, lies in Mysuru and Kodagu districts between the Mysuru plateau and the Nilgiri range, and it is a tiger reserve under Project Tiger and Project Elephant. The National Tiger Conservation Authority gives the reserve a core of 643.35 sq km and a buffer of 562.41 sq km, 1,205.76 sq km in all. The sections below take its main places in turn.

Kabini backwaters and the boat safari

The boat safari is the way to see the backwaters. A motorboat takes you along the backwaters of the river Kabini through the forest, where Karnataka Tourism says you can see crocodiles and many birds. Each safari lasts about two to two and a half hours, according to one Karnataka Tourism page, while another gives about two hours 45 minutes, so confirm the length when you book. Karnataka Tourism recommends trying both boat and jeep safaris because they do not give the same experience.

Nagarahole jeep safari

Guided jeep safaris go into the national park itself. Karnataka Tourism says the Forest Department runs safaris twice daily, from 6 am to 8 am and from 3 pm to 5 pm, from two gates: Nanchhi Gate at Kutta and Veeranahosalli Gate. Slots are often limited and advance booking is recommended, and the same page points to the Jungle Lodges and Resorts website for tariffs and contact details.

Kabini's black panther has earned global fame, as Karnataka Tourism puts it. The department describes it as a rare wildlife marvel that is spotted only occasionally in the dense forests of Nagarahole. Treat any sighting as luck, not something to plan around.

Kabini Dam, Karapura and rafting

Karnataka Tourism lists gentle river rafting on selected stretches near Kabini Dam and around N. Begur and Karapura, on the border of Nagarahole. It describes the rapids as Class I with mild Class II currents, suitable for beginners and families, and offered in the post-monsoon season from October to February. Trips are run by licensed eco-tourism providers in coordination with the Forest Department, with safety gear and guides included.

Bandipur across the reservoir

On the far side of the reservoir lies Bandipur, which Karnataka Tourism places about 80 km from Mysuru and about 215 km from Bengaluru. It has its own safaris from the reception centre in Bandipur village: Karnataka Tourism describes jeep safaris of about 90 minutes, in the morning from 6 am to 9.30 am and in the evening from 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm, and advises booking early because weekend slots fill quickly. It is a separate stop, not a part of a Kabini visit.

Mysuru and Coorg

Part of the reserve lies in Kodagu, the district also known as Coorg, and Mysuru is the nearest city with an airport and a railway station. Our Mysuru travel guide and Coorg travel guide cover the two nearest places to build a longer Karnataka trip around the park.

Things to do in Kabini

Take one jeep safari and one boat safari, ideally on different days, since Karnataka Tourism says the two are different experiences. From October to February add rafting near Kabini Dam.

All our trips in the state, tours and experiences, are on our Karnataka tours and experiences page, and the routes that cross Karnataka are listed under Karnataka tour packages. We run no trip based in Kabini, so this is a reader's guide.

Wildlife in Kabini

Kodagu district's tourism page lists the tiger, leopard, Asiatic wild dog, sloth bear, Asiatic elephant and gaur among the large animals of Nagarahole, with sambar, chital, muntjac, the four-horned antelope, wild pig, mouse deer and the South-western langur. Karnataka Tourism adds wild dogs, bears, deer and many species of bird. Karnataka Tourism says elephants are commonly seen near the river banks in the dry months.

Sightings are never guaranteed, whatever the season.

Best time to visit Kabini

Karnataka Tourism says March to May is dry and elephant sightings are common near the river banks. The monsoon months are green but offer fewer sightings, and the winter months are cool and also give good sightings. Rafting is offered from October to February. No season guarantees a sighting, so book more than one safari. For rain across the country, see our monsoon guide.

How to reach Kabini

Karnataka Tourism gives these distances for Nagarahole National Park; ask your lodge for the exact route to the gate you will use.

  • By air: Mysuru airport (MYQ) is the nearest, 94 km away.
  • By train: Mysuru railway station is the nearest, 89 km away.
  • By road: Bengaluru is 220 km away by road.

How many days in Kabini

Two nights is a sensible minimum. Each safari takes about two to two and a half hours and runs twice a day, so two nights let you do a jeep safari and a boat safari and still have a morning in hand. Add a third night if you want rafting or a second jeep drive, or to combine Kabini with Mysuru on the same trip. Routes through the city are listed on our Mysuru tour packages page, and our Bengaluru travel guide covers the city at the start of the 220 km road journey.

How to book and what to bring

Pre-booking is advisable, and Karnataka Tourism says to confirm the timings, the cost and the mode (jeep or boat) well in advance. DSLR and video cameras carry an entry fee in addition to safari tariffs. We give no tariffs because they change; ask the safari operator.

Feeding or teasing animals is strictly prohibited, and you should not make noise during a safari. Karnataka Tourism asks visitors to avoid bright-coloured clothing and plastic, and not to litter. Wear muted colours and bring layers for the early morning on the water.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kabini a national park?

No. Kabini is a reservoir and river on the edge of Nagarahole National Park, also called Rajiv Gandhi National Park, which is a tiger reserve in Mysuru and Kodagu districts. The name Kabini National Park is commonly used for the safaris on the Kabini side of Nagarahole. The reservoir separates Nagarahole from Bandipur.

What is the difference between a jeep safari and a boat safari at Kabini?

A jeep safari goes by road into the national park with a guide, while a boat safari is a motorboat trip on the backwaters of the river Kabini, where you may see crocodiles and birds. Karnataka Tourism says each takes about two to two and a half hours, twice a day, and recommends trying both.

Do you have to book Kabini safaris in advance?

Karnataka Tourism says pre-booking is advisable and that slots are often limited, so booking ahead is the safest choice. Confirm the timings, the cost and the mode of safari well in advance. For forest-department tariffs and contacts, it points to the Jungle Lodges and Resorts website.

How far is Kabini from Mysuru and Bengaluru?

For Nagarahole National Park, Karnataka Tourism gives Mysuru airport as 94 km away, Mysuru railway station as 89 km and Bengaluru as 220 km by road. The Kabini side may differ slightly, so check the route with your lodge or driver before you travel.

Can you see a black panther at Kabini?

Possibly, but rarely. Karnataka Tourism calls the black panther of Kabini a rare wildlife marvel that is spotted only occasionally in the dense forests of Nagarahole. Treat it as a bonus rather than the reason to go.

Is Kabini worth visiting in the monsoon?

It is green, but Karnataka Tourism says the monsoon months offer fewer sightings than the dry season. March to May is dry, with elephants common near the river banks, and the winter months are cool with good sightings too. If the monsoon is your only option, expect scenery more than sightings.

Which animals can you see around Kabini?

Kodagu district lists tiger, leopard, Asiatic wild dog, sloth bear, Asiatic elephant and gaur in Nagarahole, with sambar, chital, muntjac, four-horned antelope, wild pig, mouse deer and the South-western langur. Karnataka Tourism adds many bird species. Karnataka Tourism says elephants are commonly seen near the river banks in the dry months.

What should you wear on a Kabini safari?

Avoid bright-coloured clothing and plastic, as Karnataka Tourism advises, and wear muted colours with layers for cool early mornings. Do not make noise, litter, or feed or tease animals, all of which are prohibited. Camera users should expect an extra fee for DSLR or video cameras on top of the safari tariff.
