Should I choose the temple trail or the route into Kerala?
The South India Temple Trail — 10 days and the 10 Days South India Tour Package start in Chennai and share their first stops: Mahabalipuram, Thanjavur and Madurai. The temple trail stays two nights in Thanjavur, with Trichy's temples, then continues to Rameswaram and Kanyakumari. The Kerala route stays one night in Thanjavur and, after Madurai, crosses the Western Ghats to Munnar's tea hills, a night on an Alleppey houseboat and Kochi. Choose more temples, or a change of scene.
How does the northeast monsoon affect a trip in November or December?
October to December is Tamil Nadu's main rainy season and the Bay of Bengal's main cyclone season. A depression or cyclone can bring days of heavy rain to the coast: Cyclone Fengal crossed near Puducherry at the end of November 2024. The Vivekananda Rock ferry stops in strong wind or heavy rain, and trains on the Pamban bridge stop in high wind. Keep a spare day; our support is on call 24/7 during your trip.
Do I fly into Chennai or Madurai?
It depends on the route. For the temple trail or the route into Kerala, fly into Chennai, where both begin. If you only want the deep south, Madurai is much closer: its airport has direct flights from Delhi and other Indian cities as well as from abroad, and the Rameswaram and Madurai temple trail usually starts there. The six-day pilgrimage begins at Tirupati instead. Flights in and out are not included in our packages.
Can I take my phone into Tamil Nadu's big temples?
Expect restrictions. The state's temple department sets the rules at its major temples, including Madurai's Meenakshi Amman and Rameswaram's Ramanathaswamy, and they have changed more than once recently: at times phones had to be left at counters, at others carried in switched off. Photography and filming are not allowed inside. The temples have counters for footwear and phones, and your guide checks the day's rule before you go in.
Can I add Chettinad's food and mansions to a temple trip?
Yes. The Chettinad food trail is a tasting trail in the Chettinad region, usually based around Karaikudi: Chettinad chicken, pepper-forward dishes and vegetarian sides such as ven pongal, with a look inside a restored merchant mansion. The spice can be toned down, or the whole trail run vegetarian, and it is usually combined with Madurai or the temple trail. Some mansions are now heritage stays; see our Chettinad guide.
Are Tamil Nadu's temples open all day?
No. Many of the big temples open early and close for a few hours after midday. By their own published hours, Madurai's Meenakshi Amman temple closes from 12.30 to 4 pm, and Rameswaram's Ramanathaswamy temple from 1 to 3 pm. Hours change on festival days. Plan temple visits for the morning and the late afternoon, and use the middle of the day for the drive, lunch or a rest.
Which tours cover Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari together?
The South India Temple Trail — 10 days gives them two nights, one and two, after Chennai, Mahabalipuram and Thanjavur. The 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour gives them two nights, one and one, after a night at Tirupati. Each runs Madurai, Rameswaram, Kanyakumari in that order, so no road is driven twice. More on each place: Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari.

Why go to Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu's great temples are still in daily worship, from the first rituals before dawn to the last at night, many of them behind gateway towers crowded with painted figures. Our routes run south through them. Chennai is where the temple trail begins. Mahabalipuram, on the coast, has the UNESCO-listed Shore Temple and rock-cut monuments, and Thanjavur the Chola Big Temple, part of the UNESCO-listed Great Living Chola Temples. Madurai grew up around the Meenakshi Amman temple. Rameswaram, an island town, is one of the four Char Dham of Hindu pilgrimage, and Kanyakumari is the mainland's southern tip, where three seas meet. Inland, Chettinad is known for its merchant mansions and fiery cooking. More in our Tamil Nadu travel guide.
How many days to give Tamil Nadu
Ten days takes you from Chennai to the southern tip on the South India Temple Trail — 10 days: nine nights, one each in Chennai, Mahabalipuram and Rameswaram and two each in Thanjavur, Madurai and Kanyakumari. The 10 Days South India Tour Package spends five nights in Tamil Nadu, from Chennai to Madurai, then four in Kerala. Six days is enough for the deep south as a pilgrimage: the 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour has a night at Tirupati, in Andhra Pradesh, then four in Tamil Nadu. The Rameswaram and Madurai temple trail and the Chettinad food trail are planned around your dates.
When to go
Our routes are planned for November to March, when the weather is warm rather than hot. Tamil Nadu's rains come after most of India's: the northeast monsoon, from October to December, brings almost half the state's yearly rain and normally reaches the coast around 20 October. Those months are also the Bay of Bengal's main cyclone season, so allow a spare day in November and December. From April to June, inland towns such as Madurai and Tiruchirappalli see average daily highs of about 37–38°C. Pongal, the harvest festival, falls in mid-January. Month by month: best time to visit Tamil Nadu.
How to reach Tamil Nadu
From Delhi or from abroad, you fly in. Chennai International Airport is the main gateway, and the start of the temple trail and of the route into Kerala, which ends at Kochi. Madurai's airport also takes flights from Colombo, Dubai and Singapore, and Tiruchirappalli's is about 61 km from Thanjavur. The six-day pilgrimage starts at Tirupati Airport in Andhra Pradesh. For Kanyakumari, where the temple trail and the six-day pilgrimage end, the nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram, in Kerala, under 100 km away. Trains reach Rameswaram island over the new Pamban rail bridge, opened in April 2025, including a service from Tambaram in Chennai.
What our Tamil Nadu tour packages include
Every trip here is private, and the dated packages and the Rameswaram and Madurai temple trail include your own car and driver throughout. The temple trail and the route into Kerala add a local guide at the major temple sites and daily breakfast; the temple trail lists hotel stays confirmed at enquiry, and the Kerala route a night on an Alleppey houseboat with all meals on board. On the six-day pilgrimage, the team helps with darshan queues and special-entry tickets where they apply. Not included, as the packages list: flights, temple camera and special-entry fees, Tirumala's special darshan tickets, the boat to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, lunches and dinners (apart from the houseboat) and travel insurance.
How to choose your Tamil Nadu tour package
For temple architecture, if you are happy with modest dress and barefoot walking on hot stone floors: the South India Temple Trail — 10 days. For temples and backwaters in one trip: the 10 Days South India Tour Package. For pilgrims who want Tirumala, Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari without a group bus tour's pace: the 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour. For the two great southern temples on their own: the Rameswaram and Madurai temple trail. For food, add the Chettinad food trail to a route through the south. These Tamil Nadu holiday packages are starting points: a specialist can add Pondicherry or a hill station such as Kodaikanal.
