Khajuraho Travel Guide: Temple Groups, Museums and Planning

Khajuraho, in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district, was the seat of the Chandela kings, and its carved Hindu and Jain temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The places to visit in Khajuraho start with the three temple groups, Western, Eastern and Southern, led by the Kandariya Mahadeva, then the museums, the evening sound-and-light show and Raneh Falls. Come between October and March.

Frequently asked questions

Which temple at Khajuraho is still in worship?

The Matangeshwar, a 10th-century Shiva temple on the bank of the Shiv Sagar tank, just south of the Lakshmana temple. Unlike the monuments around it, MP Tourism notes, it remains a working temple, where devotees walk round a large, polished lingam.

What is there to do near Khajuraho?

Panna Tiger Reserve's Madla gate is 25 km away, by the forest department's figures, in a park of gorges and waterfalls on the Ken river, where MP Tourism lists boat trips. The Raneh Falls, about 20 km out, cut a canyon of pink, red and grey granite. We do not sell trips to either.

What time do the Khajuraho temples open?

The Archaeological Survey of India opens them from sunrise to sunset. Arrive at opening time for cool air and low light on the sandstone, and keep the afternoon for the Eastern and Southern groups.

Which is the oldest temple at Khajuraho?

The Chausath Yogini, built in the 9th century and, in MP Tourism's words, probably the oldest yogini temple in India. Its name means sixty-four, for the cells it once held, and with the Brahma and Mahadeva temples it is one of three built of granite rather than sandstone.

About Khajuraho Tours & Experiences

The best things to do in Khajuraho start with the Western Group's temples, walked slowly with a guide who reads the carving, then the quieter Eastern and Southern groups, the Archaeological Museum, the sound-and-light show after dark and, in February, the dance festival. Our Khajuraho temples tour covers all three groups in a day, with a private guide and vehicle.

Things to do in Khajuraho

Walk the Western Group with a guide

The ticketed Western Group holds the Lakshmana temple, dated to AD 954 under Yasovarman, and Kandariya Mahadeva, the largest at Khajuraho, attributed to king Ganda. On our Khajuraho temples tour, a private guide reads the walls band by band, gods, celestial women and court scenes included, so the erotic panels are seen in context.

Visit the Eastern Group's Jain temples

Near the old village, Jain temples such as the Parsvanatha and Adinatha stand beside the Hindu Vamana and Javari temples. Fewer visitors come this way, and our tour includes it.

Find the Duladeo and Chaturbhuj temples

UNESCO's site plans put Duladeo and Chaturbhuj in the Southern Group, temples the Archaeological Survey calls smaller but elaborately designed. Look for the flying celestials high on Duladeo's spire; Chaturbhuj, MP Tourism notes, has no erotic sculpture at all. Our tour reaches both.

Visit the two museums

Near the Western Group, the Archaeological Survey's museum shows sculpture from the site, a dancing Ganesha among it. The Adivart Tribal and Folk Art Museum rebuilds the houses of seven of the state's tribes, Gond, Baiga and Bhil among them.

Watch the evening sound-and-light show

After dark, a show at the Western Group tells the Chandela kings' story in English and Hindi, as light picks out the niches of the walls. Times move with the season, and the ticket is not part of our tour.

Catch the February dance festival

For a week in late February each year, the Khajuraho Dance Festival stages classical dance, Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Odissi among the forms, against the floodlit Western Group. Book rooms early for festival week.

Choosing between our tours and experiences

Our one Khajuraho trip is a tour package: a private guide and vehicle for a day across all three groups, with help booking entry tickets, confirmed on your quote rather than included. It is listed on Khajuraho tour packages. We sell no experience here; our tiger safaris are on the Bandhavgarh and Kanha pages.

When to go for these

The Ministry of Tourism recommends October to March, when walking between the groups is comfortable; in hotter months, start at sunrise. Come in February for the dance festival, or for Mahashivratri, in February or March, when the Matangeshwar temple holds three days of celebrations.

Tips for temple days

Dress modestly and wear shoes you can slip off, as you climb some temple platforms barefoot. Ask before taking pictures inside a shrine that is still in worship. For travel and stays, see our Khajuraho travel guide.
