Kaziranga Travel Guide: Safari Ranges, Seasons and Getting There
Kaziranga National Park, on the Brahmaputra floodplain in Assam, holds the world's largest population of greater one-horned rhinoceroses, along with wild water buffalo, eastern swamp deer, elephants and tigers. You see it by jeep in four ranges, Kohora, Bagori, Agoratoli and Burapahar, and by elephant in the first two. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a tiger reserve, and November to April is its season.

All of AssamFrequently asked questions
What are the best things to do in Kaziranga?
Spend most of your time on safari: jeep drives in two or three ranges and one elephant ride. Between drives, walk to Kakochang, see the Deopahar ruins or visit a tea garden; in winter, give an early drive to the wetland birds.
How do I book an elephant safari in Kaziranga?
Early, as seats are limited: Assam Tourism advises reserving them and links an online booking portal for elephant and jeep safaris from its website. Rides go out in the mornings in the central and western ranges only, and if you travel with us, we check what is running.
Can you get a Kaziranga jeep safari without booking ahead?
Yes. Assam Tourism says jeep safaris are easy to arrange and need no advance reservation. The real risk is weather, since a range's circuit can be shortened or closed at short notice, so ask the range office. Our rhino safari includes the jeep permit for the slot you book.
Is Kaziranga worth visiting?
Yes, for the one-horned rhinoceros: UNESCO records the species' largest population here, and buffalo, swamp deer, elephants and tigers share the grassland of this World Heritage Site. Two or three days cover its four ranges between November and April.
About Kaziranga Tours & Experiences
The best things to do in Kaziranga are a jeep safari across its grassland ranges and an early elephant ride, both for the one-horned rhinoceros, then winter birdwatching, a boat trip to look for river dolphins and the walk to Kakochang waterfall. Our private rhino safari sets up two drives a day with a naturalist.

Things to do in Kaziranga
Take a jeep safari in the four ranges
Jeeps cover Kohora in the centre, Bagori in the west, Agoratoli in the east and Burapahar, and Assam Tourism says you need not book one ahead. Our Kaziranga rhino safari includes the permit for the range and slot you pick.
Ride an elephant at dawn
Morning elephant rides, in Kohora and Bagori only, bring you near the rhinos and swamp deer, the Forest Department says. Seats are few, so reserve early; we confirm which rides are running when we book your drives, and the fee is paid at the park.
Watch the wetland birds
The park has 480 recorded bird species, and in winter migrants from Central Asia, such as Baer's pochard, join them on the shallow lakes. Bring binoculars.
Look for river dolphins at Bhomoraguri
Boat trips on the Brahmaputra at Bhomoraguri go looking for the Ganges river dolphin, an easy outing for a free afternoon.
Walk to Kakochang waterfall
The falls, 13 km from Bokakhat, are a walk of roughly 4 km from Naharjan village into the Karbi hills, with a plunge pool to swim in; Assam Tourism's season for them is October to March.
See Deopahar and a tea garden
Pair Deopahar at Numaligarh, an archaeological park of ruined Shiva temples with a site museum, with a tea garden where tea is grown and processed. Treks in the Karbi hills and cycling rides fill other gaps.
Choosing between our tours and experiences
Our one listing here is the private rhino safari, an experience with a naturalist, a vehicle and driver, and two drives a day. It is frank about the odds: rhinos, wild buffalo and elephants are likely, a tiger is a bonus. A tour package staying here would appear under its own heading, and the rest of Assam is under Assam tours and experiences.
When to go for these
The park opens from November to April and shuts through the monsoon floods, reopening on a date announced each season. Assam Tourism's pick for sightseeing is late February to early April; winter brings the migrant birds, and January nights fall to about 10°C by IMD's averages, often with dawn fog.
Planning tips
Stay near Kohora, home to the central range office, or at Bokakhat, 21 km away. Wear khaki, olive or another muted colour, keep the flash off and phones silent, and take a warm layer for winter drives. Our Kaziranga travel guide explains the ranges, and wildlife safaris in Kaziranga lists the safaris on their own.
