Kaziranga rhino safari
Kaziranga National Park in Assam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the greater one-horned rhinoceros alongside wild elephants, water buffalo and tigers, spread across the Brahmaputra river's floodplain grasslands. Jeep safaris run across several ranges, with elephant-back safaris offered seasonally in parts of the park, both on a permit system booked in advance. No sighting is ever guaranteed, and the park closes each year through the monsoon flood season.

Itinerary
Jeep safaris by range
Step 1
- A pre-dawn or morning drive and an afternoon drive, each confined to one of the park's ranges, with wide views across grassland and wetland rather than dense forest tracks.
Elephant-back safaris, seasonally
Step 2
- Some ranges have historically offered a short elephant-back safari at dawn, alongside the jeep safari, though availability and format can change; we confirm what is currently on offer when booking.
Permits booked ahead
Step 3
- Range permits are booked through Assam's forest department system in advance, and we handle this alongside your accommodation and transfers.
The drive itself
Step 4
- Long views across open grassland, with a strong chance of seeing rhino, wild buffalo and elephant, and birdlife across the wetlands; a tiger sighting here is a genuine bonus rather than the expectation.
Step 1 · Jeep safaris by rangeFor reference only. The final plan is confirmed in your written quote.
Highlights
- Travellers building a Northeast India itinerary, where Kaziranga is typically one stop within a wider regional trip rather than a standalone destination given the flight connections involved.
- Because the Brahmaputra floods the park during the monsoon, this is not a year-round destination in the way some other reserves loosely are — plan around its specific open season.
- Kaziranga sits on the southern floodplain of the Brahmaputra river in Assam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known chiefly as the stronghold of the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
- The tall elephant grass and shallow wetlands that make up much of the park also support wild water buffalo, swamp deer, wild elephant herds, and tigers, though the rhino remains the animal most people come for.

Who it suits
- Travellers building a Northeast India itinerary, where Kaziranga is typically one stop within a wider regional trip rather than a standalone destination given the flight connections involved. It suits anyone who wants a genuinely different safari species from the tiger parks of central India.
- Because the Brahmaputra floods the park during the monsoon, this is not a year-round destination in the way some other reserves loosely are — plan around its specific open season.
Honest cautions
- Wear khaki, olive or other muted colours; avoid white, black and bright prints.
- No flash photography, and keep phones on silent during the drive.
- Kaziranga is closed for its full monsoon flood season each year; travel outside November to April is generally not possible.

Frequently asked questions
What makes Kaziranga different from a tiger safari?
The signature species here is the greater one-horned rhinoceros, alongside wild elephants and buffalo across open floodplain grassland — a different landscape and different focus from the forest-based tiger parks, though tigers are present.
Can I still see a tiger at Kaziranga?
Kaziranga has tigers and holds Tiger Reserve status, but sightings are considerably less common than the rhino, elephant or buffalo you are more likely to see across the grasslands.
Is an elephant-back safari available?
Some ranges have offered a short elephant-back safari seasonally alongside jeep safaris, though this can change; we confirm what is currently running when we book your permits.
How do I get to Kaziranga?
Guwahati is the main airport, roughly a few hours' drive from the park; Jorhat is a closer regional airport with more limited connections.
When is Kaziranga closed?
The park closes for the monsoon flood season, broadly through the middle of the year, and reopens once the Brahmaputra's waters recede; exact dates vary by year and are confirmed when we book.
