Gulmarg Travel Guide: Gondola, Skiing and Alpine Meadows
Gulmarg, the "meadow of flowers", is 54 to 60 km from Srinagar, about an hour and a half by car. The places to visit in Gulmarg are the two-stage gondola, Kongdori, Khilanmarg, Strawberry Valley and the Maharani Temple, with skiing in winter. One night, or a day trip from Srinagar, suits most plans. Check your own government's travel advice and your insurance before you book.

All of KashmirFrequently asked questions
What can you do in Gulmarg if the gondola is closed?
In summer, walk the meadows or ride out to Strawberry Valley, as the Baramulla district suggests; in winter, ski around the town, where our gondola page notes beginner slopes and instructors. Phase 2 stops more often than phase 1, so the lower stage may still run when the upper one is closed.
What is the difference between gondola phase 1 and phase 2?
Phase 1 runs from Gulmarg to Kongdori; phase 2 carries on towards Apharwat Peak and is the section weather stops most often. Our gondola and skiing day includes tickets for both, while the six-day tour includes phase 1 and lists phase 2 as an extra, weather-dependent ticket.
Can you see Gulmarg in a day from Srinagar?
Yes. The Baramulla district reckons on about 90 minutes by road from Srinagar, and our gondola and skiing day starts and ends in the city. If you would rather stay, the six-day tour gives Gulmarg a night on its way from Pahalgam to the Sonmarg day.
What should I wear in Gulmarg?
In winter, full cold-weather clothing: January nights average about minus 8°C, by IMD's 1991–2020 figures, and skiing calls for gloves, a hat and waterproof layers. Summer is mild, with July days around 21°C, but take a warm layer for the gondola.
About Gulmarg Tours & Experiences
The main things to do in Gulmarg are the two-stage gondola towards Apharwat Peak, skiing or snowboarding from December to February, and, in summer, the meadows that give the town its name, meaning meadow of flowers. Our gondola and skiing day from Srinagar includes tickets for both stages and a local guide; our six-day Kashmir tour spends a night here.

Things to do in Gulmarg
Ride the first stage to Kongdori
The gondola's first stage lifts you from the town to Kongdori station. It belongs to the Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation, whose official website sells the tickets and asks visitors not to deal with touts. Stage 1 is included on the Kashmir Tour — 6 days.
Go higher on the second stage
From Kongdori the second stage climbs on towards Apharwat Peak, weather and queues allowing, and it is suspended in high wind or poor visibility more often than the first. Our Gulmarg gondola and skiing day includes standard tickets for both stages and keeps the day flexible rather than promising the top.
Ski or snowboard
From December to February the slopes are given over to skiing and snowboarding, and the Baramulla district says its untouched natural slopes challenge even expert skiers. Beginners are catered for as well: our gondola and skiing day can include lessons, and equipment is hired locally, which is not included.
Walk the summer meadows
From April to October the gondola runs over green slopes instead of snow. In summer our gondola day ends with time on the meadows and the mountain views before the ride down. Our Gulmarg travel guide covers the town itself.
Ride to Strawberry Valley
The Baramulla district suggests horse riding, out to Strawberry Valley or up to Kongdori to see the frozen Alpather lake. We do not arrange these rides.
Choosing between our tours and experiences
The gondola and skiing day is our way to see Gulmarg from a Srinagar base: a car and driver both ways, a local guide and tickets for both stages. The six-day tour is the way to sleep here, with one night and stage 1 only. Skiers, and anyone set on the second stage, should choose the experience; families and couples who want Gulmarg within a wider Kashmir week, the tour.
When to go for these
Skiing belongs to December to February, and the Baramulla district adds that winter brings White Christmas and New Year celebrations. The meadows are green from April to October. March, by IMD's 1991–2020 averages, is Gulmarg's wettest month, and the second stage depends on the weather in every season.
Planning tips for Gulmarg
Check the travel advice your government publishes, and your insurance, before booking: the UK's warning against all travel to Jammu and Kashmir names Gulmarg. Snow can affect the winter road from Srinagar, so check conditions before you set out.
