Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) Travel Guide: Beaches, Reefs and Ferries
Havelock, officially Swaraj Dweep, is an island of about 113 sq km in the Andamans, reached by ferry or helicopter from Sri Vijaya Puram, 39 km to the south-west. The main places to visit in Havelock are Radhanagar Beach, Elephant Beach for snorkelling and sea walking, the quieter Vijaynagar and Kalapathar beaches, and dive sites such as Nemo Reef and Barracuda City.

What are the best things to do in Havelock?
With two days, give the first to the water, a dive or a snorkel at Elephant Beach, ending on Radhanagar for the sunset. Spend the second on another dive or the mangroves, fitting in Vijaynagar's sunrise and the Kalapathar viewpoint.
Which is better, Havelock or Neil?
Havelock is the bigger island, with Radhanagar, Elephant Beach and most of the dive centres, 39 registered against Neil's 10. Neil is quieter, seen in a day or two, for Sitapur's sunrise, Laxmanpur's sunset and the Natural Bridge at low tide. Our scuba experience uses centres on both.
What is the minimum age for scuba diving on Havelock?
Ten, for an introductory dive, under the tourism department's rules. The first dive is usually a single shallow one with an instructor, after a briefing on shore. Our scuba page also asks for basic swimming ability, so check that before booking for a child.
Can you reach Elephant Beach without a boat?
Yes. Walk in from Shyam Nagar village on a shaded forest path of 45 minutes to an hour, in sturdy shoes and with water. The speedboat from the Swaraj Dweep jetty takes 20 to 30 minutes.
About Havelock Tours & Experiences

Things to do in Havelock
Dive Nemo Reef and Barracuda City
Havelock, officially Swaraj Dweep, has more registered dive operators than any other island, 39 on the tourism department's list, and Nemo Reef, Barracuda City and Elephant Beach are among its named sites. Through our Andaman scuba diving experience you can take a first dive alongside an instructor, a certification course spread over several days, or reef dives as a certified diver.
Snorkel and sea walk at Elephant Beach
On the north shore, coral starts close enough to the sand to be seen from it, which makes Elephant Beach the island's place for snorkelling and sea walking.
Swim and stay for sunset at Radhanagar
Radhanagar won its Blue Flag eco-label in 2020. Swim in the netted zones, where the sea deepens slowly; jet skis are kept off this beach. There is little food on sale, so pack a picnic and water, and arrive around 4 pm for the sunset.
Catch the sunrise at Vijaynagar
Vijaynagar, also called Beach No. 5, faces east, 15 to 20 minutes from the jetty by road. Come between 6 and 9 am for the light and an easy swim in its clear shallows.
Climb to Kalapathar's viewpoint
Beyond the dark rocks of Kalapathar, a path of about 20 minutes climbs to a lookout over the sea; ride slowly on the twisting road.
Kayak the mangroves
The tourism department also lists mangrove kayaking, glass-bottom boats, sport fishing, parasailing, jet skis away from Radhanagar, and stargazing.
Choosing between our tours and experiences
Here we offer one experience, scuba diving with a local centre, with transfers and a guide's help on the crossing from Sri Vijaya Puram. Non-divers in your group can snorkel instead. A tour package sleeping on Havelock would appear here under its own heading; the other islands are on our Andaman & Nicobar tours and experiences page.
When to go for these
Plan for October to May. For diving, the tourism department singles out March to May for calm seas and clear water, while the beaches are busiest in winter. The June to October monsoon can stop boat trips and upset ferries, and the air stays at roughly 23–31°C year-round.
Planning tips
Ask at the jetty's tourist information centre, or a lifeguard, where it is safe to swim, and never swim alone or after dark. Wear sandals in the shallows because of stonefish, treat a jellyfish sting with vinegar or ice, and leave the creeks to the crocodiles. Ferries and stays are in our Havelock travel guide, and our water trips are listed under beach and island experiences on Havelock.
