Kalaripayattu show, Kerala

Private experience

Performing ArtsKerala

Kalaripayattu is an ancient Keralan martial art, widely considered one of the oldest surviving fighting systems in the world, traditionally trained inside a sunken earthen pit called a kalari and combining strikes, grappling, weaponry and a distinctive system of body conditioning. Visitor-facing demonstrations, held in traditional lamp-lit kalaris in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, show trained practitioners performing forms, sparring and weapons work with commentary explaining the tradition's history.

Full description

Kalaripayattu training traditionally takes place in a kalari, a sunken rectangular pit with an earthen floor, oriented and constructed according to specific traditional rules. The visitor-facing demonstration format shows practitioners performing choreographed forms, unarmed combat sequences and traditional weapons work (sword and shield, spear, and the distinctive flexible urumi sword among others), usually with a short introduction explaining the art's history and its connection to traditional Ayurvedic body conditioning.

It is a genuinely physical, sometimes fast-paced show, lit by traditional oil lamps in the more atmospheric venues.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kalaripayattu really one of the oldest martial arts?

It is widely described as among the oldest surviving martial arts traditions, with roots that scholars trace back well over a thousand years in Kerala, though exact dating of oral traditions is naturally difficult to pin down precisely.

Is the demonstration safe to watch?

Yes — it is performed by trained practitioners in a controlled venue with an audience seating area.

Can I combine this with a Kathakali show?

Yes, in cities like Kochi where both are available, many visitors see both in the same evening or across two evenings.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, it tends to be a popular, engaging show for children given its physicality.
