Periyar Tiger Reserve at Thekkady, in Kerala's spice hills, is one of the few Indian reserves where the main safari runs by boat rather than by jeep: a cruise across Periyar Lake, with wildlife watched from the water at the forest's edge rather than tracked along a road. It is a considerably gentler format than a gypsy or canter game drive, better suited to travellers who want a scenic, low-effort wildlife outing than one chasing a guaranteed tiger sighting. Boat sightings tend to be birds, elephants and deer at the shoreline more often than the tiger the reserve is named for.

Itinerary
A different format from a jeep safari
Step 1
- Rather than a dawn or dusk gypsy drive, the Periyar boat safari runs as a scheduled cruise across the lake at set times through the day, typically a couple of hours per trip.
Booked in advance
Step 2
- Boat slots are limited and allocated through the reserve's booking system; we reserve these as part of planning your Kerala itinerary rather than leaving you to queue on the day.
On the water
Step 3
- A slow cruise along the lake's forested edge, watching for elephants coming down to drink, deer, wild boar and a wide range of waterbirds; a private guide points out what is visible and explains the reserve's spice-hill setting.
Beyond the boat
Step 4
- Guided nature walks and bamboo-rafting style options exist around Thekkady for travellers who want a more active complement to the boat safari; we can add these depending on your interests and fitness.
Step 1 · A different format from a jeep safariFor reference only. The final plan is confirmed in your written quote.
Highlights
- Travellers specifically chasing a tiger sighting are better served by one of the jeep-safari parks elsewhere in this guide.
- Travellers already on a Kerala circuit — Periyar sits naturally alongside Munnar's tea estates and the backwaters — who want a scenic, unhurried wildlife outing rather than a dedicated safari trip.
- Periyar Tiger Reserve surrounds Periyar Lake, an artificial lake formed by a nineteenth-century dam, in the spice-growing hills around Thekkady in Kerala.
- No flash photography, and keep voices and phones down on the boat.

Who it suits
- It does not suit anyone whose main goal is a tiger sighting; set that expectation before you book, and consider adding one of the dedicated tiger parks to your wider India itinerary instead.
- Travellers already on a Kerala circuit — Periyar sits naturally alongside Munnar's tea estates and the backwaters — who want a scenic, unhurried wildlife outing rather than a dedicated safari trip. It suits families, older travellers, or anyone who finds an open jeep over rough tracks less appealing than a calm boat.
Honest cautions
- This is a boat trip, not a jeep safari — dress comfortably rather than in safari khaki, though muted colours still help avoid startling wildlife at the shoreline.
- No flash photography, and keep voices and phones down on the boat.
- Do not expect a tiger sighting; the boat format favours elephants, deer and birdlife, and the tiger population here is genuinely elusive.

Frequently asked questions
Will I see a tiger at Periyar?
Almost certainly not from the boat. Periyar is a designated tiger reserve, but the boat safari format is far better suited to elephants, deer and birdlife along the shoreline than to tiger sightings, which are genuinely rare from the water.
How is this different from a jeep safari like Ranthambore's?
Entirely different format: a scheduled lake cruise rather than a dawn or dusk drive through forest tracks. It is calmer, more scenic and considerably less physically demanding, but not built around tiger encounters the way a jeep safari is.
How long is the boat safari?
Typically around two hours per trip, run at set times through the day rather than the pre-dawn and dusk pattern used at jeep-safari parks.
Can I combine Periyar with the rest of a Kerala trip?
Yes, it sits naturally alongside Munnar's tea estates and a backwaters stay, usually as a one-to-two-night stop at Thekkady within a wider Kerala itinerary.
What else is there to do at Thekkady besides the boat safari?
Guided nature walks, spice plantation visits and bamboo-rafting style activities are available around the reserve; we can build these in depending on your time and interests.
