Varkala: Kerala's Cliff-Top Beach Town

Travel guideKerala

Varkala is Kerala's cliff-top beach town, known for its red laterite cliff running straight down to the beach, along with surf and yoga. Experience My India's route puts it, together with Kovalam, as a coastal finish worth two to four nights, most often closing out a north-to-south Kerala trip.

Why go to Varkala

Varkala's defining feature is its cliff — a red laterite bluff that runs along the beach with cafes, shops and guesthouses strung along the top and steps down to the sand. It has a longer-established travellers' scene than Kovalam, with more of a surf-and-yoga character, and Experience My India's own route treats it as the natural coastal finish of a Kerala trip.

  • Varkala Cliff

The laterite cliff-top strip of cafes and shops overlooking the beach, and the town's centre of gravity.

  • Papanasam Beach

The main beach below the cliff, considered sacred by Hindu pilgrims as well as popular with travellers.

  • Janardanaswamy Temple

An old temple above the cliff, tied to Papanasam Beach's pilgrimage significance.

  • Sivagiri Mutt

The ashram and pilgrimage site associated with social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, on a hill nearby.

How long to stay and when to go

Experience My India groups Varkala with Kovalam under a combined two-to-four-night coastal stay, so plan Varkala as most of that if it is your only coast stop, or split the nights between the two. October to March gives calmer seas and comfortable beach weather; the June-to-September monsoon brings rough surf and stronger currents, which matters if you plan to swim.

Getting there and around

Varkala is in the south of the state, within reach of Thiruvananthapuram (TRV), Kerala's other main international airport — useful if you are travelling south-to-north and want to finish in the hills, or flying directly into the coast. The cliff-top strip itself is walkable; getting between the cliff and the wider town is by auto-rickshaw or on foot.

Where to stay

Cliff-top guesthouses and small hotels are the classic Varkala stay, most with a sea-facing cafe or restaurant attached. Quieter beach resorts sit a short distance along the coast for travellers who want the beach without the cliff-top's cafe crowds.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights do you need in Varkala?

Experience My India groups Varkala with Kovalam under a combined two-to-four-night coastal stay; plan most of that for Varkala if it is your only coast stop.

What is Varkala known for?

Its cliff — a red laterite bluff running along the beach — plus surf, yoga and a long-established traveller scene.

Is Varkala safe for swimming?

Take normal precautions and swim or surf with a school where there are riptides; conditions are calmer in the October-to-March season than during the monsoon.

How does Varkala differ from Kovalam?

Varkala centres on its cliff-top strip with a stronger surf-and-yoga scene; Kovalam, further south near Thiruvananthapuram, is built around its lighthouse and headland beaches. Experience My India treats them as a paired coastal finish.

What is the nearest airport to Varkala?

Thiruvananthapuram (TRV), one of Kerala's international airports, is the nearest major gateway.
