Varkala cliff beach day

Private experience

Beaches & IslandsVarkala

Varkala, on Kerala's coast, is known for a stretch of red laterite cliff that rises directly above Papanasam Beach, a genuinely unusual feature on the Indian coastline where most beaches meet flat sand or dunes rather than a cliff edge. A cliff-top path lined with cafes and guesthouses runs above the beach, so the day mixes cliff-walk views with time on the sand below. It suits travellers who want a quieter, more atmospheric beach stop than Kerala's busier coastal towns.

Full description

Why Varkala's cliffs are unusual

Along most of the Indian coastline, beaches meet flat sand, dunes or a straightforward drop to a road. Varkala is a genuine exception: a run of red laterite cliff rises directly above Papanasam Beach, with a cliff-top path running along the edge and steps and slopes down to the sand at intervals. It is one of the few places in India where you can walk a cliff edge and be on a beach within minutes.

Papanasam Beach itself is also considered sacred by many Hindu pilgrims, who come to perform rituals for departed ancestors at the shoreline, alongside the travellers who come for the setting and the surf.

Important information

Varkala (Papanasam Beach), Kerala

Know before you go

  • Some sections of the beach are used for Hindu ancestral rituals; be respectful and keep some distance if you see a ritual under way.
  • Cliff-edge paths are unfenced in places — take care after dark or in wet weather.
  • Modest swimwear is generally fine on the beach, but cover up on the cliff-top path through the cafe and shop area.

Best season and where it is

October to March gives calmer seas and clear cliff-top views. Varkala sits on Kerala's coast, roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) International Airport, making it a workable coastal finish to a Kerala itinerary that starts or ends in the south.

Frequently asked questions

What makes Varkala's beach different from other Kerala beaches?

A stretch of red laterite cliff rises directly above Papanasam Beach, with a cliff-top path above the sand — an unusual geological feature that most Indian beaches do not have.

Is Varkala beach safe for swimming?

Conditions vary along the beach and not every stretch is lifeguard-patrolled. We brief you on the safer sections rather than assuming the whole beach is swim-ready.

Why is Papanasam Beach considered sacred?

Many Hindu pilgrims come to Papanasam Beach to perform rituals for departed ancestors, alongside its use as a traveller beach.

How do I get to Varkala?

Varkala is roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) International Airport by road, making it a workable coastal stop at the start or end of a Kerala trip.

Is Varkala better than Kovalam?

They suit slightly different moods — Varkala's cliff-top setting is more distinctive and generally quieter; Kovalam is a longer-established beach town with a different layout. We can help you pick based on your route.

How much time do I need in Varkala?

A single day covers the cliff-top and beach comfortably; one to two nights lets you add a proper sunset and a slower cafe pace.
