Sarnath from Varanasi

Private tour

Tour packageVaranasi

Sarnath, around 10km from Varanasi, is where the Buddha is said to have given his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, and it remains one of Buddhism's four most sacred sites. The Dhamek Stupa, the ruins of ancient monasteries, and the archaeological museum holding the original Ashoka lion capital make it an easy, worthwhile half-day addition to any Varanasi itinerary.

Full description

Sarnath's Dhamek Stupa marks the spot where the Buddha delivered his first teaching, the Dharmachakra Pravartana, to his first five disciples. The surrounding archaeological park holds the ruins of monasteries and stupas built over the following centuries, and the site museum houses the original Ashoka lion capital, the emblem now used on India's national flag and currency.

It is a quiet counterpoint to Varanasi's intense ghats and lanes, and its short distance from the city makes it easy to fit into almost any schedule.
