Prayagraj Travel Guide

Travel guideUttar Pradesh

Prayagraj, formerly Allahabad, sits at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Sarasvati, and hosts the Kumbh Mela, the largest human gathering on earth. A day is enough outside Kumbh years; during the Mela itself, planning well ahead is essential.

About Prayagraj

Prayagraj, known for most of the last century as Allahabad, sits at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers with the mythical, unseen Sarasvati. The Sangam is one of Hinduism's holiest bathing sites, and Prayagraj hosts the Kumbh Mela on a recurring cycle, drawing pilgrim numbers unmatched anywhere else on earth, including the record-setting 2025 Maha Kumbh.

  • Triveni Sangam

The confluence point itself, reached by boat, where pilgrims bathe.

  • Allahabad Fort

A Mughal-era fort on the riverbank, parts of which remain under military use and are not always open to visitors.

  • Akshaya Vat

An ancient banyan tree associated with pilgrim legend, inside the fort complex.

  • Anand Bhawan

The Nehru family's former residence, now a museum on India's independence movement.

The Kumbh Mela

The Kumbh Mela is the largest human gathering on earth, and Prayagraj's Maha Kumbh, held on a roughly twelve-year cycle, is the largest of its editions. Visiting during the Mela is an entirely different undertaking from a normal visit to the city: crowds, accommodation and logistics all need planning well in advance, ideally through an operator experienced with the event.

Best time to visit, and how many days

October to February is the comfortable season outside any Mela. A day is enough to see the Sangam and the fort on a normal visit; Prayagraj also works well as a stop between Varanasi and Ayodhya or Lucknow, given its position on the Ganga plain.

Is Prayagraj the same place as Allahabad?

Yes, the city was renamed Prayagraj; older maps, books and some signage still use Allahabad.

How busy is Prayagraj during the Kumbh Mela?

Extremely busy — it is the largest recorded human gathering on earth. Accommodation and access need booking well ahead, and travelling with an experienced operator is strongly advisable during the Mela.
