Diwali in Jaipur

Private experience

Festivals & EventsJaipur

Jaipur's Pink City lights up for Diwali with strings of lamps along Hawa Mahal, the bazaars and the havelis, followed by fireworks after dark. The date changes yearly on the lunar calendar and is confirmed on enquiry; a rooftop terrace or private haveli courtyard is the most comfortable way to watch the city-wide illumination without fighting bazaar crowds.

Highlights

  • Couples, families and first-time visitors to India who want a warm, visual introduction to a major Hindu festival without the intensity of Holi.
  • Many shops close for a day around the main festival evening, though tourist-facing bazaars generally stay open.
  • Firecrackers are widely set off in the days around Diwali; those sensitive to noise or smoke should ask about quieter neighbourhoods.
  • Air quality in north Indian cities dips around Diwali due to fireworks; travellers with respiratory conditions should plan accordingly.

Full description

Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated across India, but Jaipur's old city does it with particular theatre: the Hawa Mahal facade, City Palace and the main bazaars are strung with lights for several nights, shops sell diyas and sweets in the run-up, and the main evening closes with fireworks over the old city.

It is a family and community festival more than a public spectacle to attend en masse, so the best experience is usually a good vantage point — a rooftop restaurant, a haveli courtyard, or a quiet stretch of bazaar with your guide — rather than trying to be in the thick of the crowd.

Frequently asked questions

When is Diwali in Jaipur?

Diwali follows the lunar calendar and falls in October or November; the date changes every year and we confirm it for your travel dates on enquiry.

Is Jaipur a good place to see Diwali?

Yes — the Pink City's illuminated havelis and bazaars are among the most photogenic Diwali settings in India, and it fits naturally into a Golden Triangle route.

Are fireworks loud and constant?

Yes, for several nights around the festival, though most intensely on the main evening. A hotel room away from the busiest bazaars is quieter.

Can I combine Diwali with other Rajasthan sights?

Yes — most Diwali trips are built as a few days in Jaipur inside a wider Rajasthan or Golden Triangle itinerary.
