The best beaches in India, and how to choose between them

Goa has India's widest range of beaches from busy Baga and Calangute in the north to quieter stretches in the south; Kerala's Varkala sits on a rare cliff above the sand and Kovalam is calmer again; the Andaman Islands, reached by a flight and ferry, have India's clearest water for diving and snorkelling. Each suits a different kind of trip.

India's beaches are not one thing

India's coastline runs for thousands of kilometres and the beach experience changes completely depending on where you go. Goa alone has a busy, commercial north and a calmer south; Kerala's beaches are shaped by laterite cliffs and backwater mouths rather than long open sand; and the Andaman Islands, out in the Bay of Bengal, offer the clearest water in the country but need a flight and a ferry to reach. This guide compares the main options rather than naming a single 'best'.

How to choose

  • Want nightlife, shacks and an easy first trip: North Goa.
  • Want Goa's beach culture without the crowds: South Goa.
  • Want something visually different from a standard beach, with a laid-back cafe scene: Varkala.
  • Want the clearest water in India for diving or snorkelling, and have extra travel days to spare: the Andaman Islands.
  • Travelling with young children or wanting calm water: Kovalam or South Goa are generally gentler than the open-surf beaches further north.

Season and monsoon notes

Nearly all of India's beach regions share a similar pattern: a dry, comfortable season roughly from October or November through to March, and a monsoon that brings heavy rain and rough seas from around June to September. Goa and Kerala both fall into this pattern; the Andaman Islands see their own version of it, with the calmer window running November to April. Swimming outside the dry season is possible but the sea is rougher and some beach shacks and water-sports operators close for the monsoon entirely.

A note on safety

Not every beach in India is lifeguard-patrolled, and currents vary a great deal by location and season. We brief you on which stretches near your stay are safer for swimming and which are better for walking or watching the sunset, rather than assuming every beach is equally safe to swim at.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single best beach in India?

There isn't one honest answer — it depends entirely on what you want. Goa suits an easy, social first trip; Varkala suits travellers wanting something visually distinctive; the Andaman Islands suit divers and snorkellers.

Are Indian beaches safe for swimming?

It varies by beach; not all are lifeguard-patrolled and currents differ by location and season. We point you to safer stretches near your stay rather than assuming every beach is equally safe.

Which beaches are best for families with young children?

Kovalam in Kerala and South Goa's calmer stretches are generally gentler than the open-surf beaches of North Goa.

How do I get to the Andaman Islands?

Fly to Port Blair from a major Indian city, then take a ferry to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) or Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) for the best beaches.

When is the best time to visit India's beaches?

Broadly October or November through to March across Goa and Kerala, and November to April for the Andaman Islands. The monsoon months bring rain and rough seas.

Can I combine a beach stay with backwaters or wildlife?

Yes, Kerala's beaches pair naturally with an Alleppey or Kumarakom backwaters stay, and Goa is often combined with a wider South or Central India itinerary.
