Taj Mahal sunrise tour

Private tour

Tour packageAgra

The Taj Mahal opens at sunrise and closes at sunset, and the first hour after the gates open has the softest light on the marble and by far the smallest crowds. This tour times a private, guided visit to that opening, with tickets booked in advance through the Archaeological Survey of India, and can add Agra Fort afterwards or Mehtab Bagh at sunset the same day.

Itinerary

  1. Pre-dawn hotel pickup

    Step 1

    • Your guide and driver collect you from your Agra hotel while it's still dark, timed to reach the gate for opening.
  2. Queue at the east or west gate

    Step 2

    • Security is thorough — cameras and bags are checked, and a short queue is normal even at this hour.
  3. First light through the great gateway

    Step 3

    • You enter the gardens as the sky is turning, and the Darwaza-i-Rauza, the main red sandstone gateway, frames the first proper view of the marble.
  4. The mausoleum platform

    Step 4

    • Shoes off, or shoe covers on, to walk up onto the marble platform and see the inlay work close up — the pietra dura flowers are inlaid stone, not paint.
  5. Breakfast, then the rest of the morning

    Step 5

    • Most itineraries build in breakfast back at the hotel, then Agra Fort or a rest; Mehtab Bagh, across the river, is better kept for sunset the same day.

Highlights

  • The Taj Mahal opens at sunrise and closes at sunset, and is shut every Friday.
  • The first hour after the gates open has the softest light on the marble and by far the smallest crowds, which is the entire case for a sunrise visit over a late-morning one.
  • Entry tickets are booked online through the Archaeological Survey of India, with a separate, additional ticket for the inner mausoleum chamber and a higher rate for foreign visitors; we handle the booking as part of this tour.
  • A limited number of visitors can also see the Taj by moonlight on nights around the full moon, booked well ahead — ask if that interests you instead of, or alongside, the sunrise visit.

Important information

Taj Mahal

Know before you go

  • October to March is the comfortable season, and the first hour after the gates open has by far the smallest crowds and the best light on the marble — arrive on time and you'll have the gardens close to yourself. Meeting point is your Agra hotel lobby, at a pickup time confirmed once we know your travel dates.

Cancellation policy

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start

Honest cautions

  • Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered — since this is a mausoleum, not just a monument. Wear shoes you can slip off easily for the marble platform, where shoe covers are typically handed out. Camera and phone photography is fine throughout the gardens and platform; tripods and drones are restricted, so leave both behind.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the Taj Mahal sunrise tour start?

Pickup is timed to the gates' opening at sunrise, so the exact start shifts through the year — earlier in summer, later in winter. We confirm the pickup time on your quote once we have your dates.

Which gate should I use, east or west?

Both the east and west gates open at sunrise and lead to the same gardens; the choice mostly comes down to which side of the Taj your hotel sits on. Your guide meets you at whichever gate is closer on the morning.

Is the Taj Mahal open every day?

No — it is closed every Friday. It otherwise runs sunrise to sunset, with a small number of moonlight viewing slots around the full moon each month, which need booking well in advance.

Do I need to take my shoes off inside?

Yes, on the marble mausoleum platform itself; shoe covers are generally provided at that point so you don't need to go barefoot on stone that has been standing in the sun.

Should I add Mehtab Bagh or Agra Fort onto the same morning?

Mehtab Bagh, the garden across the river, is better saved for sunset the same day — it's the classic view of the Taj without the crowds. Agra Fort works well straight after breakfast, while you're already dressed and out.

Is a guide compulsory at the Taj Mahal?

It isn't compulsory, but we recommend a government-approved guide strongly. Touts without real credentials cluster at the ticket counters and gates; a booked guide gets you past that entirely.
