Agra day trip from Delhi

Private tour

Tour packageAgra

Agra is close enough to Delhi (around 230km) to see the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and, time permitting, Fatehpur Sikri in a single long day, either by private car on the Yamuna Expressway (roughly three to four hours each way) or by fast train such as the Gatimaan Express (around 100 minutes). An early start is essential to see the Taj Mahal in good light and avoid the worst of the midday heat and crowds.

Full description

A single-day return trip from Delhi covering the Taj Mahal and, usually, Agra Fort, with Fatehpur Sikri added only if the schedule allows it comfortably. It is the most common way international visitors on a short Delhi stay see the Taj Mahal without an overnight stay.

The trip works well by road with a private car, or faster by train — the Gatimaan Express cuts the one-way journey to around 100 minutes, leaving considerably more time at the sights.

Important information

Agra

Know before you go

  • Bags, food and certain electronics are restricted inside the Taj Mahal complex; your guide briefs you on the current rules before entry.

Duration and season

A full day, typically 12 to 14 hours door to door by road, or shorter by train. Best October to March; April to June is intensely hot for a full day outdoors, and July to September brings monsoon rain that can slow the road journey.

Cancellation policy

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start

  • Cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.
  • No payment is taken until you approve the itinerary.

Who it suits

  • Travellers with limited time in Delhi who cannot fit an Agra overnight into their schedule. It is a long day, so it suits reasonably fit travellers comfortable with an early start and several hours of walking; families with young children or anyone wanting a slower pace are often better served by an overnight instead.

Honest cautions

  • The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays — we plan around this automatically.
  • A long car day is genuinely tiring — if you can manage an overnight in Agra instead, it makes for a much more relaxed visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is a day trip enough time for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort?

Yes, for both, with an early start. Adding Fatehpur Sikri as well makes for a very long day and is only advisable with an especially early departure.

Is the train faster than driving?

Yes — the Gatimaan Express covers the route in around 100 minutes each way, compared with three to four hours by road, leaving more time at the sights.

Is the Taj Mahal open every day?

It is closed on Fridays; we schedule around this when planning your day.

Should I do an overnight instead?

If your schedule allows it, yes — it removes the time pressure and lets you see the Taj Mahal at both sunrise and sunset.
