Things to do in Auli
In winter, skiing is the reason to come: Uttarakhand Tourism lists the slopes, the training schools and the rental equipment, and gives January to March as the season. When the snow melts, walking takes over. Uttarakhand Tourism says that from Auli you can trek towards Nanda Devi, Kamat, Mana Parvat and Dunagiri, that Gorson Bugyal connects with the trail to Kuari Pass, and that the meadows are green in summer. For longer walks in the state, see our trekking in Uttarakhand page and the Valley of Flowers trek, and for other adventure activities the adventure experiences in Uttarakhand.
Best time to visit Auli
Uttarakhand Tourism says January to March is the best time for skiing and October to March for nature lovers. It also calls Auli a year-round holiday site, and describes the meadows as a green carpet in summer. If you want snow underfoot, plan for the winter months; if you want clear mountain views and walking, October to March is the range the state gives, and the summer months suit meadow walks. Check current weather and road conditions with the local authorities before you travel.
How to reach Auli
How many days in Auli
Two nights are enough to ski for a day or to walk to Gorson Bugyal and Chattrakund. Add a day for Kwani Bugyal or for Tapovan, and more for the larger treks, since Uttarakhand Tourism lists Nanda Devi, Kamat, Mana Parvat and Dunagiri among the peaks you can walk towards. Skiers taking lessons will want longer, and GMVN can say how many days its courses run.

Frequently asked questions
Is Auli good for beginners learning to ski?
Uttarakhand Tourism says the slopes are suited to professionals and beginners, and that there are ski training schools and equipment for rent. It names GMVN for lessons. The season it gives for skiing is January to March, so book lessons for those months and ask about conditions before you travel.
How far is Auli from Joshimath?
About 14 km, according to Uttarakhand Tourism. Joshimath is the town below the resort, and a cable car between Joshimath and Gurson near Auli is described on the state's page, but news reports say it has been suspended since the 2023 subsidence, so check before relying on it.
Which airport is closest to Auli?
Uttarakhand Tourism names Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun as the closest, about 286 km away, with a cab from the airport as the way up. The distance makes it a long day from the plane. Our guides to Rishikesh and Haridwar cover the nearest towns on the plains.
What treks start from Auli?
Uttarakhand Tourism lists Gorson Bugyal, about 3 km away at 3,056 metres; Chattrakund, 4 km at 3,300 metres; Kwani Bugyal at 3,380 metres, about 13 km beyond Gurso Bugyal; and Saildhar Tapovan, about 15 km away. It says Gorson links to the trail to Kuari Pass and names Pangerchulla among the peaks reached through Auli.
Can you visit Auli without skiing?
Yes, for walking and views. Uttarakhand Tourism describes Auli as a year-round holiday site, with Gorson Bugyal a green carpet in summer and views of Nanda Devi, Trishul and Dron Parvat. For nature lovers it gives October to March as the most suitable period, so a summer visit suits meadow walks rather than snow.
How high is Auli?
Uttarakhand Tourism says it stands at around 2,800 metres, with Gorson Bugyal at 3,056 metres, Chattrakund at 3,300 metres and Kwani Bugyal at 3,380 metres. Allow time to acclimatise on the way up, and read our altitude sickness guide before you plan the longer treks.
What is special about the Auli artificial lake?
Uttarakhand Tourism calls it the highest artificial lake in the world, a turquoise lake with green slopes that shines against the snow in winter. It says the lake can be reached through the cable car, so check whether the ropeway is running before you plan a visit.
