About New Delhi

New Delhi was designed by the British architect Edwin Lutyens in the early 20th century as the capital of British India, and its wide, tree-lined avenues, government buildings and India Gate war memorial still define the area today. Nearby, and easily combined on the same day, are two of Delhi's finest Mughal-era monuments: Humayun's Tomb and the Qutub Minar.

  • India Gate

A war memorial and one of Delhi's most recognisable landmarks, at the end of the ceremonial Rajpath avenue.

  • Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Mughal Gardens

The President's residence, with formal gardens sometimes open to visitors seasonally.

  • Humayun's Tomb

A UNESCO World Heritage Mughal garden-tomb, and an architectural forerunner of the Taj Mahal.

  • Qutub Minar

A soaring 12th-century minaret and UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Delhi.

How many days, and best time to visit

A single day comfortably covers India Gate, Humayun's Tomb and the Qutub Minar, with time for a government-quarter drive-past. October to March is the season, with cool, clear mornings; some winter weeks bring smog.
