What makes a day trip actually work
The single biggest factor is drive time. Agra from Delhi (around 230km on the Yamuna Expressway) and Sarnath from Varanasi (around 10km) sit at opposite ends of what still counts as a day trip — the first is a long day built around one main sight, the second leaves an easy half-day free.
The second factor is whether the destination rewards a full day or is genuinely a half-day stop. Fatehpur Sikri and Sarnath are both compact enough to pair with something else nearby; Ajanta and Ellora, by contrast, are each worth a full day on their own and are usually visited on separate days from Aurangabad rather than combined.
What matters when choosing a day trip
- Distance and road quality — expressway routes like Delhi–Agra are faster and more comfortable than routes over older highways.
- Whether an early start pays off — sunrise at the Taj Mahal or the ghats at Sarnath rewards leaving before dawn.

How to choose
If you have one spare day in Delhi, Agra for the Taj Mahal is the highest-value choice; Jaipur's distance makes it a long, tiring single day and we generally recommend an overnight instead if you can manage it.
If you are already in Agra, add Fatehpur Sikri to the same trip rather than a separate day — it is close enough to combine.
Ajanta and Ellora, despite both being reachable from Aurangabad, are large enough sites that combining them into one day means rushing both; we plan them as two separate days where time allows.

October to March is the best window for day trips across north India — cooler temperatures make the car time and walking at sites more comfortable. April to June is intensely hot in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan; July to September brings monsoon rain that can slow road travel. South Indian day trips such as Mysore are workable year-round, with October to February the most pleasant.
