Multi-generation India trips
A trip spanning grandparents, parents and children works when the itinerary is built around the least mobile traveller, not averaged across the group — step-free or lift-access hotels, shorter walking days at heritage sites, and a private car that lets you adjust the day rather than follow a fixed group schedule.

Multi-generation trips succeed or fail on the same factors as toddler trips, but for the opposite reason: it is usually the oldest traveller's mobility and stamina, not the youngest's, that sets the real pace. Plan the trip around whoever in the group has the most limited walking capacity, and build genuine rest into the schedule rather than treating it as downtime lost from sightseeing.
- Hotel access — ask specifically about lift access and ground-floor or accessible rooms; heritage properties in particular can have steps and no lift.
- Walking at sights — forts and palaces often involve uneven stone, steps and no shade; check what alternative viewing or seating options exist.
- Pace — a private car and driver, rather than a fixed-schedule group tour, lets you shorten a day on the fly if someone is tired.
- Medical basics — carry any regular medication in hand luggage, and know the location of good hospitals near your route, particularly if anyone in the group has a known condition.
- Shared activities — a houseboat cruise or a folk evening gives everyone something to enjoy together at their own pace, rather than splitting the group by activity level.
Kerala's backwaters circuit is the gentlest multi-generation option — a houseboat cruise needs no walking at all, and the pace throughout is naturally slow. A Golden Triangle at a deliberately slower pace than usual, with jeep rather than climbing access at forts where available, also works well and gives grandparents and grandchildren plenty of shared moments.
We would generally steer a genuinely mixed-mobility group away from a heavy Rajasthan desert-and-fort circuit or any itinerary with long daily drives, unless the older travellers are confidently mobile.
Are Indian heritage hotels accessible for less mobile travellers?
It varies significantly — many heritage properties are converted historic buildings with steps and no lift. Tell us about specific mobility needs and we will check and choose hotels accordingly.
What is the gentlest India circuit for grandparents?
Kerala's backwaters, particularly a houseboat cruise, involves the least walking and the most relaxed pace of any major India circuit.
Can we split the group for some activities?
Yes — a private car and guide let more active family members do an extra activity while others rest, then reconvene.
How much walking is typical at Indian forts and palaces?
Often significant, with uneven stone surfaces and steps and limited shade — we can advise on which specific sites have the gentlest access.

4/51 week agoVery good overall. The itinerary was tight but never felt rushed, and the driver was superb. The hotel on night two was a step down from the others — clean, but the Wi-Fi barely worked. Would still recommend.

5/51 month agoThe Multi was booked at short notice and they still pulled everything together — driver, entry slot, and a guide who had clearly briefed himself on what we were interested in. Impressive.

5/53 months agoStraightforward and honest. They told us in advance which parts would be crowded and which days to avoid, and the route they suggested was better than the one we had planned ourselves.
