Rath Yatra, Puri
The Rath Yatra at Puri, Odisha, is a major Hindu chariot festival in which the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are pulled through the streets in three massive wooden chariots, built fresh each year. It falls on the second day of the bright lunar fortnight in the Hindu month of Ashadha, typically placing it in June or July.

Three enormous wooden chariots, rebuilt each year to specific traditional dimensions, carry the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra from the Jagannath Temple through Puri's streets to the Gundicha Temple. Huge crowds gather to pull the ropes and to watch — it is one of the most physically dramatic public festivals in the country.
Rath Yatra falls on the second day of the bright lunar fortnight (Shukla Paksha Dwitiya) in the Hindu month of Ashadha, typically placing it in June or July, and shifts on the Gregorian calendar each year. (confirmed on enquiry)
Puri gets extremely crowded around the festival, with road closures and a genuinely intense crush near the chariots themselves. This is a festival better watched from a planned vantage point with a guide than navigated independently for a first-time visitor.
When is the Puri Rath Yatra this year?
Typically June or July, following the lunar calendar. Confirm the exact date for your travel year. (confirmed on enquiry)
Can tourists watch, or is it participants only?
Tourists can watch, and often join in pulling the ropes at points along the route, though the crowd density is significant and a guide helps with positioning safely.
Are similar Rath Yatra festivals held elsewhere?
Yes, smaller-scale versions are held in various cities with Jagannath temples, but Puri's is the original and by far the largest.

4/51 week agoVery good day out. Guide was knowledgeable and the driver excellent. The only reason it is not five stars is that the lunch break felt too long when we would rather have seen one more site.

5/53 weeks agoEverything was arranged before we landed — driver, guide, tickets, even the entry slot. We just turned up. The car was clean, cold water in the back, and the driver was calm in traffic that would have terrified me.

5/52 months agoThe homestay night was the memory we will keep — cooking with the family, the kids playing cricket in the lane. It was arranged with real thought, and the drive out there was beautiful.
