Onam celebrates the harvest and, in local tradition, the annual homecoming of King Mahabali. Households lay out Pookalam, elaborate carpets of fresh flower petals, in front of their homes; the ten-day build-up culminates in Thiruvonam, when families gather for an Onasadya, a vegetarian feast of up to two dozen dishes served on a banana leaf.
The best-known public spectacle is the vallam kali, snake-boat races on Kerala's backwaters and rivers, where teams of dozens of oarsmen race long, low chundan vallam boats — the Aranmula boat race and similar events draw large crowds along the banks.
Arrive during the Onam window
We time your Kerala itinerary to include Thiruvonam or the days around it.
Pookalam and market visit
See flower markets and Pookalam-making in a town or village, guided so you understand the symbolism.
Onasadya feast
We book a proper Onasadya at a heritage home or reputable restaurant — a genuine multi-course banana-leaf meal, not a tourist buffet.
Boat race (where dates align)
If your dates coincide with a scheduled snake-boat race, we arrange a good vantage point along the route.
Experience My India quotes this trip per person in INR after confirming your dates, hotel category and group size. The written quote names every hotel and inclusion, and nothing is charged until you approve it.

Best season and starting point
Onam runs across roughly ten days with Thiruvonam as the main day, in the Malayalam month of Chingam (broadly August to September). The exact date of Thiruvonam is confirmed for your travel year on enquiry.
Who it suits
- Food-focused and culturally curious travellers, and anyone building a Kerala backwaters trip who wants a festival to anchor the dates around. It is a gentle, family-oriented festival with none of the crowd intensity of Holi or Diwali.
Honest cautions
- August–September falls within Kerala's monsoon tail, so pack for rain even though it is festival season.

5/51 week agoWe had a wheelchair user in our group and the team planned every stop around step-free routes without us having to chase. That level of care is rare. Highly recommended for families.

4/51 month agoA smooth, well-thought-out trip. The hotels were lovely, the driving was long some days, and one stretch of road was tiring — but they warned us about that, and the stops along the way made it bearable.

3/53 months agoMixed feelings. The sites were spectacular and the driver excellent, but our guide's English was harder to follow than we expected and we missed some of the detail. The office apologised quickly when we mentioned it.

What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellation terms are confirmed with your written quote
- No payment is taken until you approve the itinerary.
When is Onam?
Onam falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam, broadly August to September, and is a fixed festival within that window rather than a lunar one — we confirm the exact Thiruvonam date for your travel year on enquiry.
Is Onam a good time to visit Kerala?
Yes, though it falls at the edge of monsoon season, so expect some rain. The backwaters are lush and green at this time of year.
What is an Onasadya?
A traditional Onam feast of up to two dozen vegetarian dishes served on a banana leaf, eaten in a specific order — a genuine highlight of visiting during Onam.
Can I watch the snake-boat races?
Yes, if your dates align with a scheduled race such as the Aranmula boat race. We check the calendar and arrange a vantage point.
