Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated across India, but Jaipur's old city does it with particular theatre: the Hawa Mahal facade, City Palace and the main bazaars are strung with lights for several nights, shops sell diyas and sweets in the run-up, and the main evening closes with fireworks over the old city.

It is a family and community festival more than a public spectacle to attend en masse, so the best experience is usually a good vantage point — a rooftop restaurant, a haveli courtyard, or a quiet stretch of bazaar with your guide — rather than trying to be in the thick of the crowd.
