What is Lathmar Holi?

A specific Holi tradition at Barsana and Nandgaon where women playfully beat men with sticks (lathis), re-enacting a story about Krishna. It is a scheduled event within the wider week of celebrations, not the main-day colour-throwing.

Older children can join with supervision; for younger children, a rooftop or courtyard vantage point away from the densest crowds is the better option.

Do I need to book accommodation early?

Yes — hotel rooms in Mathura and Vrindavan and nearby Agra sell out well ahead of Holi week. We recommend booking three months or more in advance.

Old, dark-coloured clothes you do not mind losing, closed shoes, and eye protection if you are sensitive to powder colour.

Some street stalls sell bhang-infused drinks and sweets; avoid these unless you specifically want them and know the dose.

Krishna is said to have grown up in Vrindavan and courted Radha there, and the towns' Holi is built around that story: Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon (women beating men with sticks in mock retaliation for Krishna's pranks), the colour-throwing at Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan, and a build-up of events across roughly a week rather than a single day.

It draws heavy crowds, including many domestic pilgrim-tourists, and the lanes around the main temples become tightly packed and thoroughly coloured. This is Holi at its most concentrated and least sanitised — worth doing once, and worth doing with a plan.

Arrive a day early
