Hemis Monastery, around 45km from Leh, is Ladakh's largest and wealthiest gompa, and its annual festival is the region's most famous: masked monks in elaborate costume perform cham, ritual dances representing the triumph of good over evil, in the monastery's main courtyard over two days.

It draws visitors from across Ladakh and beyond, alongside the monks and local villagers for whom it is a genuine religious observance rather than a staged show — worth remembering when watching and photographing.
