Travellers who enjoy immersive urban energy and are happy to walk for hours among huge, good-natured crowds.
Less suited to those wanting a quiet, low-crowd experience or with limited mobility, given the walking and the density of people.

Traffic across Kolkata slows considerably during the festival; build in extra time between stops.

Durga Puja is West Bengal's largest festival and Kolkata's defining event: neighbourhood committees compete to build the most striking pandal (a temporary structure, often artistically themed) around an idol of Durga, and the city spends five days moving between them, day and night, on foot and by any transport available.

It closes with Bijoya Dashami, when idols are carried in procession to the Hooghly river and immersed — an emotional, crowded closing scene for anyone who has spent the preceding days watching the pandals go up.
