Ganesh Chaturthi is Mumbai's largest festival, when households and neighbourhoods install elaborate clay idols of Ganesh for up to eleven days of worship, ending in a city-wide procession to immerse the idols in the sea, most famously at Girgaon Chowpatty.

Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of the elephant-headed god Ganesh, and Mumbai celebrates it more visibly than almost anywhere else: enormous public pandals (Lalbaugcha Raja is the most famous) install towering idols that draw queues lasting hours, while households keep smaller idols at home for the same period.

The festival closes with Anant Chaturdashi, when idols across the city are carried in procession to the sea and immersed, most iconically at Girgaon Chowpatty — a spectacle of drumming, dancing and enormous, good-natured crowds that brings much of the city to a standstill.

The guide and driver were genuinely lovely and the sites speak for themselves. But we lost nearly an hour to a monument closure that the office should have known about, and the replacement stop felt like padding. Decent, not exceptional.
