Theyyam ritual in Kerala
Theyyam is a sacred ritual performed at village temples across North Kerala, mainly in the Kannur and Kasaragod districts, in which performers in towering red headdresses and elaborate painted make-up embody local deities, often in a trance state, before the community.

- Rituals often run late into the night; be prepared for a long evening in a rural setting.
- Follow your guide's lead on photography and where to stand — this is a place of worship, not a stage.
- Travellers with a serious interest in India's living ritual culture who can build some flexibility into their Kerala dates, since Theyyam cannot be scheduled to order the way a Kathakali evening can.
In Theyyam, a performer undergoes hours of elaborate make-up and costuming — towering headdresses, vivid red and black face paint, sometimes flaming torches — before entering what is understood locally as a state of possession by a deity, in which they bless and interact with the assembled village. It takes place at kavus (sacred groves) and small temples rather than in tourist venues, on dates set by each shrine's own ritual calendar.
Because it is a genuine act of worship rather than a performance for an audience, watching it is a privilege that requires a degree of restraint: staying at the edge of the crowd, following your guide's lead on photography, and understanding this is someone else's sacred occasion.

4/51 month agoA lovely, well-organised trip. Only small gripe is that the morning pickup was fifteen minutes late on day one. Everything after that was punctual to the minute, so I suspect it was a one-off.

4/52 months agoGreat value for a private tour. The guide was strong on history, slightly less so on the wildlife side, but he was honest about it rather than making things up, which I appreciated.

What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellation terms are confirmed with your written quote
- No payment is taken until you approve the itinerary.
Can I book a Theyyam performance in advance like a show?
Not exactly — Theyyam follows each temple's own ritual calendar rather than a tourist booking system. We check which temples near your route have performances scheduled during your travel dates, ideally weeks or months ahead.
Is it appropriate for tourists to watch?
Yes, respectfully — visitors are generally welcome to observe from the edge of the gathering, following the guidance of a local guide on etiquette and photography.
What time of year does Theyyam happen?
Broadly October to May, with the exact dates varying by temple. It largely pauses during the monsoon months.
How far in advance should I plan?
As early as possible once your Kerala dates are set — the earlier we know your travel window, the better chance of matching it to a nearby temple's calendar.
