- Arrive on time for the make-up session — it is a genuine highlight and easy to miss if you come only for the main performance.
- Performances are usually narrated or subtitled for visitors, so no prior knowledge of the stories is needed.
- Photography is typically allowed during the make-up session; check current venue rules for the performance itself.
- Any traveller in Kochi for an evening — this is one of Kerala's most accessible cultural experiences, needing no prior knowledge of the art form, and it suits families as well as individual travellers.
Kathakali tells stories from the Mahabharata, Ramayana and Puranic literature through an intensely codified vocabulary of facial expression, eye movement and hand gestures (mudras), accompanied by percussion and vocalists. The green-painted face, red-and-white eye markings and elaborate costume and headdress take a performer one to two hours to apply, and watching this transformation is, for many visitors, as memorable as the performance itself.
Kochi's venues typically run this as a two-part evening: the make-up demonstration, with commentary explaining the art form, followed by an excerpted scene performed and narrated for an audience unfamiliar with the full multi-hour traditional form.

4/54 days agoVery good day out. Guide was knowledgeable and the driver excellent. The only reason it is not five stars is that the lunch break felt too long when we would rather have seen one more site.

4/53 weeks agoA lovely, well-organised trip. Only small gripe is that the morning pickup was fifteen minutes late on day one. Everything after that was punctual to the minute, so I suspect it was a one-off.

5/52 months agoWe asked for a slower pace because of a bad knee and they rebuilt the day around it without any drama — fewer steps, more sitting, same highlights. That flexibility is why I would book again.

What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellation terms are confirmed with your written quote
- No payment is taken until you approve the itinerary.
Do I need to know the story to enjoy it?
No — venues aimed at visitors narrate the story and explain the gesture vocabulary as the performance goes, so no prior knowledge is needed.
How long does the whole evening take?
Around two to two and a half hours, including the make-up demonstration beforehand.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes, generally — the visual spectacle of the costume and make-up tends to hold children's attention well.
Is a traditional Kathakali performance really this short?
Full traditional performances can run through the night; what visitors see is a shortened, narrated excerpt designed to introduce the art form in an evening.
