- Wear quick-drying clothes and secure footwear such as sandals with a strap or old trainers — flip-flops come off in the water.
- Sun cream and a hat matter even on an overcast day, since you are on open water for a couple of hours.
- If you are not a confident swimmer, say so when booking — it does not rule you out, but it changes which stretch we recommend.
- No swimming qualification is required, but basic water confidence matters, since you will get wet and may briefly go into the water if a raft flips on a bigger rapid.
The Ganga leaves the Himalayan foothills at Rishikesh and, for a stretch above the town, drops through a series of rapids before settling into the calmer water that runs past Ram Jhula and on towards the plains. Commercial rafting is organised on a handful of stretches along this section, put in upstream at points such as Kaudiyala, Shivpuri or Marine Drive and taken out around Rishikesh town or Ram Jhula, so the distance and the intensity of the run depend on which stretch you book.
Rapids on the Ganga here are commonly graded on the international scale from I up to III or IV depending on the stretch, the season and the water level on the day — the longer upstream stretches carry the more sustained rapids, while the short run below Brahmpuri is a gentler, beginner-friendly introduction. Pickup
We collect you from your Rishikesh hotel, or arrange a transfer if you are coming from further afield, and drive you to the put-in point for your chosen stretch.
Kitting up and the safety briefing
At the riverbank you are fitted with a life jacket and helmet, and a guide runs through paddle commands, what to do if you go into the water, and how the raft is steered, before anyone gets in.
On the water
Your guide sits at the back of the raft and steers through the rapids while the group paddles on command; the calmer stretches between rapids are the moment to look up at the river gorge and the forested hills on either side.
A stop in calm water
On most runs the raft pulls into a quiet pool partway down for anyone who wants to swim or simply float alongside the boat before continuing.
Take-out and return
The raft comes ashore around Rishikesh town or Ram Jhula, where a vehicle is waiting to take you back to your hotel.

Rishikesh
- Wear quick-drying clothes and secure footwear such as sandals with a strap or old trainers — flip-flops come off in the water.
- Sun cream and a hat matter even on an overcast day, since you are on open water for a couple of hours.
Best season and starting point
The rafting season runs roughly late September to June, and closes through the monsoon, from about July to early September, when the river runs too high and fast to raft safely. The clearest, most comfortable months for most travellers are October to April. Meeting point is your Rishikesh hotel, or a point we confirm with you if you are travelling in from Haridwar or Dehradun.
Who it suits
- Standard operator restrictions apply — pregnancy, heart conditions and certain back or neck issues typically rule this out; final eligibility is confirmed by the operator on the day.
- First-time rafters and families with older children are well served by the shorter, gentler stretches; the longer routes with sustained rapids suit travellers who want a proper adrenaline day and are reasonably comfortable in water. No swimming qualification is required, but basic water confidence matters, since you will get wet and may briefly go into the water if a raft flips on a bigger rapid.
Honest cautions
- Carry a change of clothes and a towel for afterwards; leave valuables, including phones you are not prepared to lose, at your hotel or in a dry bag arranged with the operator.
- If you are not a confident swimmer, say so when booking — it does not rule you out, but it changes which stretch we recommend.

5/51 week agoSunrise start was worth the alarm. We were through the gates before the crowds and had almost twenty minutes with the place nearly to ourselves. The driver was waiting exactly where he said he would be.

What rapid grades will I actually raft in Rishikesh?
It depends on the stretch and the water level on the day, but rapids on the commercially run sections of the Ganga at Rishikesh are commonly graded from I up to III or IV. Shorter, downstream stretches are gentler; the longer upstream runs carry the more sustained rapids. We confirm the grading for your specific stretch and dates with the operator before you book.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
No formal swimming qualification is required, but you should be reasonably confident in water, since you may briefly go into the river if the raft flips on a bigger rapid. Life jackets are worn throughout and guides are trained in water rescue.
What is the best time of year to go rafting in Rishikesh?
Late September to June, with October to April being the clearest and most comfortable stretch of that window. The monsoon, roughly July to early September, closes rafting because the Ganga runs too high and fast.
Is rafting suitable for children or older travellers?
Many families raft the gentler, shorter stretches with older children; exact minimum ages are set by the operator, typically in the range of 12 to 14. There is no fixed upper age limit, but general fitness and the health restrictions that apply to any water activity are checked at booking.
Can I combine rafting with bungee jumping or camping in Rishikesh?
Yes — the three are commonly booked together, either back to back on the same trip or as a single overnight package that pairs a rafting run with a riverside camp and a bonfire evening.
