It runs from Manali in Himachal Pradesh, itself over 2,000m, up over a series of high passes, including Rohtang La and Baralacha La, across the windswept Moray Plains, and down into Leh at about 3,500m. It is open only in summer, closed by snow for the rest of the year, and demands more of the driver, the vehicle and the traveller's acclimatisation than the Srinagar route.

This is a drive worth doing for its own sake, not just as a way to reach Ladakh: the scenery shifts from Himachal's pine forests to a bare, lunar high-altitude landscape over the course of a single day.

Day 1 — Start from Manali
Depart Manali and climb through pine forest towards Rohtang La, the first of the route's high passes.
Day 2 — Over Baralacha La to Sarchu
Cross Baralacha La and the high Moray Plains to an overnight stop at Sarchu, a deliberate break in the ascent rather than a push straight through.
Day 3 — On to Leh
Continue over the remaining high passes and descend into Leh, arriving with the rest of the day free — and no sightseeing, deliberately, on arrival day.
Day 4 — Rest in Leh
A full rest day in Leh before any further ascent, the same mandatory rule that applies to every Ladakh itinerary regardless of how you arrived.
