The Sundarbans, straddling the India-Bangladesh delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers, is the world's largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is the only place where the Royal Bengal Tiger has adapted to a tidal, part-aquatic habitat. There is no jeep safari here at all — the entire reserve is navigated by boat through narrow tidal creeks, usually over one or more nights, with permits arranged through the West Bengal forest department. Tiger sightings are genuinely rare given the dense mangrove cover and the tiger's own elusive, swimming behaviour here, so the trip is worth taking for the landscape, birdlife and crocodiles as much as for any tiger encounter.

Itinerary
A wholly boat-based format
Step 1
- There are no roads or jeeps inside the core reserve; you travel by boat throughout, typically a larger vessel for the main journey and smaller country boats for narrower creeks.
Permits through the forest department
Step 2
- Entry to the reserve's core areas requires a permit issued by the West Bengal forest department, arranged in advance; we handle this alongside your boat and lodge bookings.
Tide-dependent movement
Step 3
- Which creeks are navigable, and when, depends on the tide rather than a fixed dawn-or-dusk pattern — your guide and boat crew plan the route around the tide tables for your dates.
What you watch for
Step 4
- Watchtowers along the route offer the best chance of a distant tiger sighting; more reliably, expect saltwater crocodiles, spotted deer, and a wide range of waterbirds along the creeks.
Step 1 · A wholly boat-based formatFor reference only. The final plan is confirmed in your written quote.
Highlights
- The Sundarbans is a vast delta of tidal mangrove forest spanning the India-Bangladesh border, formed where the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers meet the Bay of Bengal.
- There is no road network through the core reserve, so unlike every other park in this guide, the Sundarbans has no gypsy or canter safari at all.
- The entire experience is boat-based, moving slowly through narrow tidal creeks and wider channels over one or more days, usually with a night or more spent aboard or at a riverside lodge.
- No flash photography, and keep noise down near watchtowers and creek mouths where a tiger might be resting.

Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start
- Cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.
- No payment is taken until you approve the itinerary.
Who it suits
- Travellers building a Kolkata or West Bengal leg who want a genuinely different landscape experience — this is closer to a small-boat river expedition than a wildlife game drive, and it rewards patience and an interest in the mangrove ecosystem itself rather than a fixed expectation of seeing a tiger.
- It does not suit anyone wanting a reliable tiger sighting or a short, single-drive outing; a Sundarbans trip is usually two to three days, and the tiger here is famously difficult to spot even for people who visit repeatedly.
Honest cautions
- This is a multi-day boat trip, not a single safari drive — pack as you would for a short river expedition, including a hat, sun protection and layers for cooler mornings on the water.
- No flash photography, and keep noise down near watchtowers and creek mouths where a tiger might be resting.
- Entry to the reserve's core areas always requires a forest department permit; independent, unpermitted travel into the core is not possible.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a jeep safari option in the Sundarbans?
No — there are no roads through the core reserve, so the entire experience is boat-based, quite unlike the jeep safaris at parks such as Ranthambore or Corbett.
How likely am I to see a tiger?
Genuinely rare. The Sundarbans tiger is elusive even by tiger standards, partly adapted to swimming between islands, and dense mangrove cover limits visibility. Most visitors come away without a sighting and still consider the trip worthwhile for the landscape and birdlife.
How many days should I plan?
Two to three days is typical, given the boat-based travel time within the delta and the tide-dependent routing.
Do I need a special permit?
Yes, entry to the reserve's core areas requires a permit issued by the West Bengal forest department, which we arrange as part of planning your trip.
How do I get to the Sundarbans?
Trips typically start from Kolkata, with a road transfer to the boat launch point followed by the river journey into the delta.
