Because of the volume of pilgrims the temple receives, the TTD runs a structured system of darshan options, from the free general queue to paid special entry tickets, designed to manage very large numbers of visitors.
Special entry darshan and the hair-tonsure tradition
Special entry darshan tickets (commonly referred to informally as a faster or VIP route) are sold by the TTD and provide a quicker path to darshan than the general queue, which can otherwise involve a long wait. These tickets are booked through the temple trust's own official channels, and their price, availability and booking window change with demand and season — we do not quote a fixed figure here, and confirm the current position with you before your visit.
Many pilgrims also take part in the hair-tonsure (mundan) tradition at Tirupati, offering their hair as an act of devotion at dedicated tonsure halls maintained by the temple. This is entirely optional for visitors and is a well-known, long-standing practice rather than something we recommend or require.

Best season and starting point
Tirupati can be visited year-round, though the Brahmotsavam festival (usually September-October) is among the most significant occasions and draws especially large crowds. Weekdays outside major festivals and school holidays are generally calmer than weekends.
