Wayanad: Kerala's Forested Highlands

Wayanad sits further inland and higher than Kerala's other hill country, part of the wider Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve that runs into neighbouring Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It is the state's wildlife-and-nature destination — forested highlands, waterfalls and quieter trails — and Experience My India's own region guide positions it explicitly as the place to go for travellers who want off the busier Kochi-Munnar-backwaters circuit.

Experience My India's suggested stay is around two nights. It is the region most worth adding if you are travelling for two full weeks rather than the standard eight to twelve days — enough time to add wildlife and forest trails without rushing the rest of the route. October to March is the clearest, driest season; the monsoon (June to September) keeps the forest at its greenest but brings heavy rain.

Wayanad is Kerala's most inland hill district, and Kozhikode/Calicut (CCJ) — one of the state's international airports — is the nearest major gateway, with Kannur (CNN) as an alternative. It is reached by road and is furthest from the standard Kochi-Munnar-Alleppey-Varkala route, which is why it suits a longer trip rather than a quick add-on.

Wayanad's stays lean toward plantation homestays and small eco-resorts set into the forest and estate land, in keeping with its character as Kerala's quieter, off-the-circuit region, rather than large resort properties.
