Alleppey: Kerala's Backwaters and Houseboat Capital

Alleppey is where most people mean when they say they want to see Kerala's backwaters. The town sits on Vembanad Lake, the hub of a network of canals and waterways that thread through Kuttanad, a stretch of paddy country so low-lying that farming happens below sea level. The classic way to experience it is a kettuvallam — a traditional rice barge with a curved thatched roof, converted into a houseboat with cabins, a deck and a cook on board.

Kerala's own famous-for list puts houseboats and backwaters first for a reason: nowhere else in the state gives you a whole day and night of moving water, palm banks and village life going by at walking pace.

The backwaters stay navigable and scenic through the June-to-September monsoon too — the paddy fields turn a deeper green — but expect daily rain. April and May are hot and humid on the coast and low country.

The nearest major gateway is Cochin International Airport (COK), north of Alleppey; most visitors arrive by private car as part of a wider Kerala route rather than as a stand-alone trip. Once in Alleppey, the point is to get off wheels entirely: houseboats and canoes are how the backwaters are actually explored.
