Kochi: Kerala's Heritage Gateway

Kochi is the practical start or finish of most Kerala trips — Cochin International Airport (COK) is the state's main international gateway — and its old quarter, Fort Kochi, is worth more than a transit stop. Centuries of Portuguese, Dutch and British presence, layered onto older Jewish and Arab trading links, left a compact old town of colonial streets, warehouses turned into cafes and galleries, and the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets that still work the harbour mouth at sunset.

One to two nights is the suggested stay — enough for the old town, a fishing-nets sunset and one evening cultural show without cutting into time elsewhere. October to March is the most comfortable season; April and May are hot and humid, and the June-to-September monsoon brings heavy rain to the coast.

Cochin International Airport (COK) is Kerala's principal international gateway, which makes Kochi the natural start of a north-to-south route through Munnar, the backwaters and the coast. Fort Kochi's old town is compact and walkable; a ferry or short drive connects it to Mattancherry and the mainland.

Fort Kochi has a strong run of heritage-style properties — old Dutch and colonial buildings converted into boutique stays — within walking distance of the fishing nets and old-town lanes. Staying on the mainland near Marine Drive trades that character for convenience if you are arriving late or leaving early from the airport.
