About Hampi
Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, one of medieval India's largest and wealthiest kingdoms, until it was sacked in the 16th century. What remains is a UNESCO World Heritage site spread across a surreal landscape of giant granite boulders on the Tungabhadra river: temples, a stone chariot, royal enclosures and bazaars, many still standing, others reduced to foundations.
