Pickup
We collect you from your Hampi accommodation in the morning or afternoon, depending on the light and heat that day.
Travel to the boulder area
A short drive or a walk, depending on which boulder field suits your level and the day's plan, takes you to the climbing area.
Warm-up and safety briefing
Your guide talks you through crash pad placement, spotting, and how to fall safely, and sets an easy warm-up problem to start.
Climbing
You work through a sequence of problems suited to your level, with your guide adjusting the difficulty as the session goes on.
Return
You are driven back to your accommodation once the session ends, typically after a couple of hours on the rock.
Hampi's terrain is unlike almost anywhere else in India for climbers: enormous rounded granite boulders are scattered across the landscape around the ruins of the Vijayanagara empire, many within walking distance of rice paddies, the Tungabhadra river and the old temple complexes. The combination of world-class rock and an extraordinary historic setting has made it an internationally recognised bouldering destination, drawing climbers from overseas as well as within India.
Bouldering here means climbing without ropes, on problems typically no higher than a few metres, with a crash pad and a spotter for safety rather than a harness. Grading follows the same systems used internationally, commonly the V-scale or the French font scale, and problems range from very easy to seriously technical, often within metres of each other on the same boulder.
Good for
It is a grip- and upper-body-intensive activity rather than a cardio one, so general climbing fitness matters more than the endurance a trek or a rafting day asks for.
- Climbing shoes make a real difference on granite; hire locally if you do not travel with your own.
- Sessions are best in the cooler parts of the day, early morning or late afternoon, since granite in direct midday sun becomes uncomfortably hot to hold.
- Bring water, sun protection and a hat; there is little shade on some boulder fields.
- Chalk for grip is normal and usually available through the guide, but bring your own if you have a preference.
Best season and starting point
The comfortable climbing season is roughly November to February, when daytime temperatures are manageable and the rock is not too hot to hold safely; the south Indian summer from March onward makes bouldering here uncomfortable. Meeting point is your Hampi accommodation, with transfers to the boulder area included as part of the session.
Do I need previous climbing experience?
No. Beginners can have a genuinely good session on easier problems with an instructor, and Hampi's boulder fields have enough range that a guide can find the right level for anyone, from a first-timer to an experienced climber.
What grading system is used?
Problems are graded on the same international bouldering systems used elsewhere, commonly the V-scale or the French font scale, and range from very easy to highly technical depending on the boulder.
What should I bring?
Climbing shoes if you have them (rental is usually available locally), water, sun protection, and comfortable, flexible clothing you can move freely in.
When is the best time to go bouldering in Hampi?
Roughly November to February, when temperatures are manageable. The rock becomes uncomfortably hot to climb in the summer months, so sessions outside the cooler season are best scheduled for early morning or late afternoon.
Is bouldering safe?
Bouldering carries the usual risks of climbing without ropes, managed through crash pads, spotting and choosing problems suited to your level. A guide sets the difficulty and safety practice for your session, and problems are typically low enough that falls, if they happen, are onto padding rather than a serious height.

5/51 week agoTook my teenage sons and was braced for boredom. Instead the guide got them involved — spotting carvings, tasting street snacks, haggling for a scarf. Best day of the holiday by a distance.
