Two drives a day
A pre-dawn drive and a late-afternoon drive, timed around when animals are most active and the light is best; your naturalist and driver collect you from your hotel with time built in for the drive to the gate.
Gypsy or canter, by zone
Ranthambore is split into numbered zones, and your permit is valid for one zone on one drive. We book gypsy (open six-seater jeep) safaris wherever available, since they are quicker and quieter than the larger canter trucks.
Permits booked ahead
Zone permits are allocated in advance through the forest department's booking system, not sold at the gate, so we secure these as part of planning your trip rather than leaving you to navigate the portal yourself.
The drive itself
Around three hours of slow travel through the zone, stopping at waterholes and known crossing points, with your naturalist reading fresh tracks and calls. There is no script for what you will see on any given drive.
Ranthambore was once the private hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur, and the old fort — Ranthambore Fort, a hilltop stronghold with temples and gateways — still stands inside the reserve, giving many drives a genuine sense of place beyond the wildlife itself. It became one of India's original Project Tiger reserves and remains one of the country's most visited tiger parks, largely because it sits within easy reach of the Golden Triangle circuit.

- Wear khaki, olive or other muted colours; avoid white, black and bright prints, which are more visible to wildlife and to other visitors' cameras.

- Many reserves, Ranthambore included, close to safaris one day a week in some seasons and for the full monsoon core season; we confirm the current closure calendar when booking your permit.
- Mornings can be genuinely cold in winter (December to February) even though the day warms quickly — bring a layer for the early drive.
Best season and starting point
Ranthambore is open roughly October to June; April to June tends to give the clearest sightlines as the forest thins and animals move to water, though it is also the hottest stretch. The park closes for the monsoon core season each year, with exact reopening dates confirmed once we book your permits. Drives begin from the park's entry gates near Sawai Madhopur town, where your guide meets you at your hotel beforehand.
How likely am I to see a tiger at Ranthambore?
We cannot honestly quote a probability — it depends on the zone, season and pure luck on the day. Ranthambore has a strong reputation among India's tiger reserves, but no drive comes with a guarantee.
Should I book a gypsy or a canter safari?
A gypsy, where available — it is a smaller, quieter open jeep that gets closer and moves faster than the larger canter truck. We book gypsy permits wherever the zone allocation allows it.
Can I visit Ranthambore Fort as well as doing a safari?
Yes, the fort sits inside the reserve boundary and can be visited separately from a wildlife drive; we can build this in alongside your safari.
How many safaris should I book?
Two drives (one morning, one afternoon) over a two-day stay is the usual balance between a fair chance of a sighting and not overloading the trip; we can add more if wildlife is your main focus.
How far is Ranthambore from Jaipur or Delhi?
Sawai Madhopur, the gateway town, has its own railway station with direct connections from Delhi and Jaipur; by road it is roughly three to four hours from Jaipur.
