Two drives a day
A pre-dawn drive and a late-afternoon drive, each around three to four hours given the park's size, with a private naturalist and driver collecting you from your lodge.
Gypsy safaris, by zone
Kanha's core is divided into zones — Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi among them — and your permit covers one zone per drive in an open gypsy jeep.

Zone permits go through the forest department's advance booking system, and peak-season slots (December to March) fill quickly; we book these as part of planning your trip.
The drive itself
Long, varied tracks through forest and open meadow, with a real chance of spotting barasingha in the maidans as well as the more elusive tiger and leopard.
Kanha is one of India's largest and best-managed tiger reserves, a wide expanse of sal forest, bamboo stands and open meadows (locally called maidans) in Madhya Pradesh. It is often cited as an inspiration for the forest setting of Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book, a claim made widely by guides and writers rather than something Kipling himself confirmed in detail — worth knowing as a story rather than a fact to repeat as certain.
Kanha is also home to the barasingha, the hard-ground swamp deer, a subspecies once reduced to a small population here before a long, dedicated conservation programme rebuilt its numbers within the park — one of Indian wildlife conservation's clearer success stories, and something we would rather point out qualitatively than attach an invented figure to.

Best season and starting point
Kanha is open roughly October to June and closes for its monsoon core season each year, with the exact reopening date confirmed once we book your permits. Winter (November to February) is cooler and more comfortable; the hotter months towards June often bring better visibility as vegetation thins. Drives begin from one of the park's gates, and your naturalist collects you from your lodge, most of which sit close to an entrance.
Did Kipling actually base the Jungle Book on Kanha?
It is widely said that Kanha's landscape inspired the setting, but this is a claim repeated by guides and writers rather than something Kipling documented himself — enjoy it as local lore rather than settled fact.
What is a barasingha and why is it significant here?
The barasingha, or hard-ground swamp deer, is a subspecies that came close to disappearing before a long conservation effort at Kanha rebuilt its numbers within the park — one of the clearer wildlife recovery stories in India.
Is Kanha better than Bandhavgarh for tiger sightings?
Neither can be called definitively better — Bandhavgarh's smaller, denser zones give more concentrated chances per drive, while Kanha is larger and more varied ecologically. Many serious wildlife travellers do both.
How do I get to Kanha?
Jabalpur is the more commonly used airport, with Raipur as an alternative; both involve a road transfer of several hours to the park gates.
How many nights should I plan at Kanha?
