Mehrangarh sits high enough above the old town that most visits start with a vehicle up to the entrance rather than a walk from below.
The museum galleries
Inside, a series of galleries hold palanquins, the old royal armoury, textiles and portraits, laid out through grand chambers including the Moti Mahal and the mirrored Phool Mahal.

Old cannons line the ramparts, with a view straight down over the Blue City's indigo-washed rooftops.

- October to March is the comfortable season for Jodhpur, with the fort's exposed stone ramparts getting properly hot by midday in summer. There is some walking on old stone floors and steps between galleries, so comfortable shoes matter more here than at a flatter site.
- Photography is generally allowed; a few galleries restrict flash to protect textiles and paintwork. The old town's blue-washed lanes below the fort are worth an hour on foot with a guide who knows them, rather than only seen from the ramparts above.
Why is Jodhpur called the Blue City?
For the blue-washed houses that spread out below Mehrangarh Fort, traditionally linked to Brahmin households and said to help keep the interiors cool; the colour has since spread more widely through the old town.

Two to three hours with a guide covers the museum galleries and the ramparts properly. Add Jaswant Thada afterwards if you have a bit longer.
