Delhi first
Most itineraries open in Delhi with two contrasting eras side by side: Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar from the Mughal and pre-Mughal period, the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk from Shah Jahan's later capital, and New Delhi's India Gate and government quarter from the twentieth century.
On to Agra
A fast train or a few hours by road brings you to Agra for the Taj Mahal, ideally at sunrise, and Agra Fort; Fatehpur Sikri sits en route if you're travelling on to Jaipur by road rather than doubling back.
Finish in Jaipur
The Pink City closes the loop: Amber Fort outside town, the City Palace and Hawa Mahal within it, and the Jantar Mantar observatory next door.
Getting between the three
Delhi to Agra runs on the fast Gatimaan or Shatabdi train in under two hours, or about three to four hours by road on the Yamuna Expressway. Agra to Jaipur is a longer road leg, often broken up with a stop at Fatehpur Sikri or the Abhaneri stepwell.
The Golden Triangle is India's best-known circuit: Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, the three cities that between them hold Humayun's Tomb, the Red Fort and Qutub Minar, the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, and Jaipur's Amber Fort, City Palace and Hawa Mahal. It packs the country's densest run of Mughal and Rajput monuments into five to seven days, which is why it is so often a first trip to India. This tour runs it with a private guide and vehicle throughout, rather than as a group coach itinerary, so the pace is set by you.
- October to March is the season for this circuit; the desert heat of April to June and the humidity of the monsoon both make three cities of walking hard going. Dress modestly for the mosques and temples along the way — shoulders and knees covered — and carry shoes you can slip off easily.
- Photography is generally fine with a phone or handheld camera; tripods and drones are restricted or banned at several of the protected monuments on this route, the Taj Mahal included, so check ahead if you're carrying either. Government-approved guides are worth booking at each city rather than hiring at the gate, since touts cluster at the busiest entrances, particularly in Agra.
How many days does the Golden Triangle need?
Five to seven days is the usual range — one night or so in Delhi, one in Agra, and two to three in Jaipur, with travel days between. Shorter versions exist but rush the Taj and Jaipur both.
What order should I visit Delhi, Agra and Jaipur in?
Delhi to Agra to Jaipur is the standard direction, since it flows one way by road or rail rather than doubling back, and it lets you finish in Jaipur if you're flying onward from there.
Can I do the Golden Triangle by train?
The Delhi-Agra leg is easy by train, under two hours on the Gatimaan or Shatabdi. Agra to Jaipur has far weaker rail options, so that leg is normally driven.
Is one guide with me for the whole trip?
Usually not — we use a government-approved local guide in each city, since the best guides tend to specialise in their own city's monuments, with the same private driver and vehicle throughout.
Is the Golden Triangle a good first trip to India?
Yes, it's the classic one, and for good reason: it covers the country's most famous monuments in a manageable loop. It is also more intense than, say, Kerala or Goa, so pace it with at least one slower day if you can.
