Getting up to the fort
The main gate, Suraj Pol, is reached on foot up a paved ramp, or by a short jeep transfer if you'd rather save your legs for inside; both routes are common.
The courtyards and halls
Through the gate, a sequence of courtyards leads to the Diwan-i-Aam and on to the private apartments.
The Sheesh Mahal
The Hall of Mirrors is the highlight: walls and ceilings inlaid with thousands of small mirror fragments and coloured glass, designed to glitter by candlelight.
The view over Maota Lake
From the ramparts, the fort's reflection in Maota Lake below, and Jaigarh Fort on the ridge above, are the classic photograph — best in the soft light of early morning.

Beyond the main gate, a sequence of courtyards leads through the Diwan-i-Aam, the public audience hall, to the private apartments and on to the Sheesh Mahal, the Hall of Mirrors — walls and ceilings inlaid with small mirror fragments and coloured glass, designed to glitter by candlelight. The Sukh Niwas and the fort's gardens sit beyond it, and the ramparts give the classic view over Maota Lake below and Jaigarh Fort on the ridge above.
- Go early — Amber Fort is a coach-tour staple, and by mid-morning the courtyards and the Sheesh Mahal doorway both fill up. The climb from the main gate involves a paved slope and some steps, manageable for most fitness levels but worth knowing about if mobility is a concern; a jeep transfer avoids most of it.
- Photography is allowed through most of the fort; a few interior chambers restrict flash or tripod use to protect the mirror work and old paintwork. October to March is the comfortable season — the exposed stone courtyards heat up fast once the sun is properly up.
How do you get up to Amber Fort?
On foot up the paved ramp to the main gate, Suraj Pol, or by a short jeep transfer if you'd rather not walk it. Both are normal ways in.
What is the Sheesh Mahal?
The Hall of Mirrors, one of the fort's private apartments, with walls and ceilings inlaid with small mirror fragments and coloured glass designed to catch candlelight — it's the single most photographed room inside.
How long does a visit to Amber Fort take?
Two to three hours is typical with a guide, covering the courtyards, the Sheesh Mahal and the ramparts. Add time if you also want to see Jaigarh Fort on the ridge above, often visited on the same trip.
Is Amber Fort busy?
Yes, it's one of Jaipur's most-visited sites and draws coach groups from mid-morning. Arriving close to opening time is the main way to beat the crowds.
Is Amber Fort the same as Amer Fort?
Yes — Amer and Amber are two spellings of the same fort and the same town, just outside Jaipur.
